Titleist AP-2 shaft advice please

I'm looking for some advice please. I am a 6 handicap with a driver swing speed of 105 and a six iron speed of 83. I tend to flight the ball lower than I'd like with my long irons and woods. I am buying new irons soon and have gone through some fitting sessions (indoors only), so I'm a bit nervous about ordering custom clubs without really being sure. I would like to get the new Titleist AP-2 irons in 4-PW. Titleist offers the Project X, Project X Flighted, and Rifle shafts as options on their website. I called Titleist and they said they could also do the Rifle Flighted, which was the recommendation by the fitter. I've read on this site that the Project X have a stiffer butt section than the Rifle shafts, and I assume this is true for the Flighted models as well? They will be built at 0.5" longer than standard and 3 degrees upright. My fitter said I should order the Rifle Flighted in FM 5.2. My questions: Is the Project X flighted an upgrade from the Rifle Flighted? Should I stay with the FM5.2 if I go with the Project X Flighted, or drop down to a FM5.0? I also want to order some Cleveland wedges, and I'd like to match shafts there, but maybe go to an FM 4.7. Do you agree? Would that be the standard Project X then since the short irons aren't flighted anyway? I also want to get one or two hybrids to replace my 3 iron and possibly the 4 iron on occasion. If those are a different brand than Titleist, can I just order the Project X Flighted shafts in them and tell the OEM that I want them in an FM5.2 or higher and expect them to match my set of irons? My fitter said to get a 5.7 in the hybrids ( he was assuming graphite...); an FM6.2 in the fairway woods, and an FM 6.6 in my driver. This doesn't surprise me because I've gone through other fittings that also suggest an X flex in my driver and R400 flex in my irons... I would like to order these asap, but I don't want to rush it and make a mistake. I think there might be a Titleist demo cart going out to dealers soon that will have the new AP-1 and AP-2 irons on them, and the cart will be set up like Callaway's Opti-Fit cart, allowing you to try different shafts with different heads...

You're post sounds exactly what I was going through not too long ago, we both have similiar ss and ball flights. I have had fitting issues like you as well, even at one point improperly fitted with regular shafts.

I would try to find a set of the AP2s with the Titleist-only Nippon NS Pro 100 (or lighter 970 version). I am using the Mizuno Nippon 950 version with great success. They are very, very smooth and have a low kick point and higher ball flight. Honestly, one of the best things that has happened to my iron game in a while was fitting these shafts.

Ok, great! I can't wait to hit the AP2s again, and make the final decision. My home club has the Cobra fitting cart with the Pro CBs, the Mizuno cart, and the Titleist driver and wedge demos, but no Titleist irons or FittingWorks. I now have to wait until the next demo day (April 26th) to finalize my decison, and shaft choice.

Anyone know if the Titleist reps know much about fitting? May sound stupid, but I asked him about the V grooves last time, and he said the AP2s have u grooves... He has to do it by sight, not numbers, and a few weeks ago he put me in standard length, and the 5.5 shaft. I swung on the "fitting board" and my contact was in the middle of the sole tape, but the iron I had in hand was an AP2 6 iron that he said someone had bent flat slightly (1 or 2 degrees, he wasn't sure.) He then asked me, just to verifly whether the bending flat would affect me, to hit a draw, and I couldn't get one to move much, so he sad that standard lie would be better for me. Not saying this isnt possible (needing standard specs), but I just wanted to know if there is a better way to be fit by Titleist?

We'll just have to see what happens... I hope I can wait until then. Our State Championship for school is two days after that demo day, so I guess it will be better to make the change after the season ends (and before summer tournaments start), anyway.

ram22592,

Titleist reps know their stuff. Unfortunately, the reps can't be everywhere. Sometimes demo days are run by guys just hired for that purpose and are not always as knowledgeable as the reps, some are...

I suggest going to the demo days to try everything, but select a Titleist fitter to work with you on your final fitting.

My club pro got his Titleist fitting cart late last week and I got to hit few balls with few heads and shaft combinations. I could tell big differences between different shaft/head combos. Believe it or not, I liked ZB w/PX the best, although ZB w/Nippon wasn't too bad. AP1 w/PX was pretty nice if one likes more forgiving clubs.

However, I think I'll stick with my Cobra Pro CB's for now. To answer your question, wait until you can check out Titleist Sure-Fit cart to try out your preferred setup.
