bought ust v2
HI.
iam just bought a shaft pull out not knowing that it came out of a thru-bore head. i went to my local golf shop with my taylormad r5 head and ask the guy to change the shafts. he said this v2 came out of a callaway or titleist head cause its a thru-bore shaft.
he recomended i get a head the fits. he said he could cut the shaft to fit but then it would feel more stiff, he said the best thing would be to find a new head.

that being said can someone give me a little list of heads that it the shaft would work with.
the ones i found are titleist 907 D2 460 (most titleist heads)
callaway x460
what other newer heads can i use

You can use in the R5. the v2 has a 4" tip designed for bore thru. But it can be tipped for std bore. This works well for " for TM because they usually need an extra 1/2" anyways. Std tipping is 1.5" for std bore, but you could tip 2" for a TM head. That leaves 1.5 inches: 1" insertion ans cover the remaining .5" with ferrule

Probably not. Maybe a tiny bit, but you have to remember if you were to put a shaft with a 4" PTS into a standard bore head (remember TM are even less than std) the spin would be crazy. The tip would just be too soft to handle the load.

If you were to tip the shaft 1.75 or 2", it would maybe play at most 1/3 flex stiffer, which probably isnt noticeable. The R5 is a highish spin head anyways, so the extra 1/4" tipping should keep spin in line a little bit.

I just put a V2 (45" inch) bore through shaft in an 425 r7. I just had them trim the tip 1.5", and it turned out to play at 45". (I came up with the 1.5" because the shaft I pulled out was 43.5". The V2 in my 425 (now) does not play any different than my V2 in my Titleist 905r, which has a borethrough.

But it needs to be tipped, or else it will play weak.

the total length of the shaft is 45 inches so if he cuts 2'off wont it be too short

When shafting, you always tip trim, then cut to length. However, with a pullout, you simply tip trim to length.

It's counter-intuitive until you realize that the shaft has already been cut to length.

Example:

45" shaft from a borethough. Non-borethough head. Stick the shaft in the hosel and measure overall length.

If you come out with 47", then you know that you have a 2" BBTGM and need to trim 2" for the shaft to play true to flex AND length. If the measured length is 46.5" then you trim 1.5". 46" gets 1" of trim.

Where you will run into a problem is if the shaft played 45" in one head, and when you insert it into another head it measures less than 45". This means that the BBTGM measurement was more (hence more tip trimming), or they shaft played at less than std length (std tip trimming and more butt trimming) on the old head than the new, so you options are to find another shaft or go with a partial insertion (never going less than 1.5" on insertion depth) or extension (you must know what length the club played before the shaft was pulled or either how much tip trim was done.)

If you trim the V2 you have so that it measures 45" when dry inserted into the new head, it should play pretty similar to the way it played in the old head. Head weight differences and other more subtle thing can affect feel and flex to a small degree, but you will be pretty close.

This is for driver to driver. Taking a V2 45" Titleist pull and putting it into a 3 or 5 wood like a V-Steel is a little more involved, but can easily be done.

Good luck!

yes ok right now i have a r5 with a irod it measure from the butt end to the hozel just over 43 inches(top of the club head right befor the silver hozel) so it total is 43 inches ,

now my v2 shaft is 45 inches total so what iam seeing is that i need to cut alomost 2 " off the v2 so that it plays at 43 inches like my set up right now

and the shaft will fell the same . why would he say it will feel stiffer

Close.

  • Put the V2 in the r5 head and measure.
  • Whatever it is over 45" (since we know the shaft is 45") is the length of the bottom of the bore in the r5 to the ground. Cut this amount from the tip.
  • After installation, the V2 will play to 45" and correct flex in the r5.

Don't worry about measuring to the top of the hosel or the old shaft since we have no idea how much was cut from either end.

Yep,

Many TM heads are 1.5" insertion, so you can trim 1.5" from the tip and .5" from the butt to have it play slightly softer or 2" from the tip and no butt trim to play as it would in the Titleist head it came out of.

Make sure that all of the old epoxy of out of the head and the shaft is actually touching the bottom of the bore, as I would have guess that the r5 had anywhere from a 1.25" to 1.75" bore depth.

The guy told you to find a new head for the shaft because he either a) doesn't have alot of shafting knowledge/experience, b) didn't want to screw with it or c) is one of the 'buy a new shaft because reshafts aren't as good' guys.

ok thanks alot i just got screwed up on how to measure a driver dind t know that it ment overall lenght of club from buttend to bottom of club head.

so in a bore thru club (titleist) the shaft actually is 45inches but in a none borethru club head its around 43 inches but both clubs would overall be the same lenght 45"

so my thinking now if i were making a club for a borethru head id cut shaft to 45 inches then install for a nonborethru cut to 43 inches and install and they both should play the same

iam thinking he just didnt want to screw with it the guy has been in business for a very long time.

In a borethough (especially if it's a 3" insertion like Titleist) you don't tip the shaft generally (unless its a combo flex, notoriously whippy, or you just want to stiffen it up), you install and cut to length.
