If you are struggling with Hardy One Plane Swing

I hope this helps
I am a recent convert to the one plane swing as taught by Jim Hardy. I was skeptical after getting the original Plane Truth for Golfers a year ago and trying to learn the one plane swing. Then he released the "Master Class" version. This book is a must, if you are trying to learn what he teaches. I just recently got the DVD's and I am VERY glad that I did. If you can afford to get both, it's well worth it to say the least. He covers things very clearly in the DVD's and some of the drills that are demonstrated include wonderful commentary from the players and teachers that are demonstrating about the pitfalls of learning the swing.

Of course you need to have a good grip and set up to start. I personally have learned a lot from working with "the 48 inch "zone" that he talks about in the book and DVD's. Assuming all of those set up things are in place, there is a capstone if you will, and it's true for any type of swing really:
If you are having trouble learning the movements of the swing, it can be very helpful to understand how the club and clubface should behave midway back and midway through the swing. More specifically, in the 1ps, understand the idea of being "closed" in the backswing and "open" in the through swing at the midway point. I was trying to work on body movements and was doing pretty well, but out in the back yard I saw that if I had the clubface square to the arc midway back, my arms and torso were automatically doing what they are supposed to. Then, the release and follow through start to make total sense. If the clubface is square to the arc at these points in the swing, your body and arms will likely be doing what they need to be doing. For me, having the visual of the cluface tilting down (mirroring my spine angle) midway back makes the backswing feel like one motion as opposed to me trying to piece together the right elbow and the torso, etc.. It's hard for a former two-planer(me) to trust the release left on the throughswing in the 1ps. This is because we are so used to rotating the forearms and therefore the club through shot from hip to hip. If you have the clubface open to the 1ps arc in the backswing, you will ruin the swing from there on out. You don't want rotation hip to hip in the Hardy 1ps.
My struggle was feeling like I was holding off or not releasing the club through impact. That would be true if I was swing 2 plane. The thing that makes the left release work is the clubface not needing to be rotated through impact.
A great way to learn to trust that this release will actually work, and hit balls straight without what feels like a slappy motion, is to hit hip to hip wedge shots where the face is angled down on the BS and mirrors that on the throughswing. The idea of gator arms and all of the things that Hardy talks about start to make intuitive sense. If you can learn it in "miniature" it might make it easier to learn the full-full swing.
Anyway, I am sorry for the long post. When I discover something that really helps I want to pass it on the fine peeps at the WRX

Hi BD, yeah, I recently got a lesson from a pretty good OPS teacher, and he said I had a good start from just the books and dvds, but the drill that would really help me is the inner circle/outer circle drill that is in the dvds and the first plane truth book. I'm just doing this drill over and over and it's really helped. Also, not trying to kill the ball helps :welcomeani: when he kept saying i want you to turn as hard as you can, that kind threw me off. Staying in control is one of the keys to this swing I think.

ive been working hard on more of a roatry swing, just useing my body cos im fed up with the inconsistentcys of the hands in the swing, and i wanted to have a set shot shape, cos i use to just aim at the pin and hope it goes straight at it lol, but ive worked real hard on drawing the ball, and ive got that going real well, i could draw the ball anyway but now its more of a consistent draw. about 6-8 yards. I really try anf feel in the downswing my hips rotating hard and use them to square the club face.

But do you know any drills on how to stop the club getting to rounded in the backswing and getting across the line, my backswing is kind of Jimenez like at the moment! ? In the mirror when i stop halfway, to get it on plane i feel i have to kind of roate or flatten my left wrist through the backswing, but i know this is a dangerous move.

Any drills or help you have in your book that will help me?

Look on youtube, search for Jeff Ritter, he's got a bunch of drills, faults and fixes etc. that will help you a lot.

It is a good post, Noelsy, as usually. Although, while being in the process of deepening constantly my knowledge on biokinetics I cannot commit throughfully and agree to all details Mr.Hardy recommends for one planers, I still see OPS as a very sound method of learning a pivot-guided swing motion.

The Master Class book is great and it should be read by all serious students of a rotary swing motion.

Cheers
