Cotton in a Superquad

Call me crazy...
So yesterday, a bunch of us were talking about hotmelt and what to use to make a driver feel more solid, and Joey suggests that Cotton Balls are easy to use and claims that it is reversible. I had hit a head that had been foamed before, but that also was too much work for me. So 2 o clock rolls around and I ran to cvs to get cotton balls so that I would have something to keep me occupied while I watched the masters

I unroll the cotton balls and tear them into strips and start pushing them through with a kebab skewer, well actually I tried several things but ended on this, it worked the best, and packed that sucker full of cotton balls through the weight ports, using all 4 ports to get an even distribution. I probably loaded 15 balls in total, they are pretty packed in there, and I got to thinking that they probably wouldn't be easy to get out. Joe says you can use an air compressor, but I think that the only way I could get them out is pulling the shaft and going through the hosel.

Anyways, I had no clue whether I had done this correctly or not or if I was even going to like it. I took it out today, it was AMAZING. It sounds like a 975 D and feels like a 510TP. If you dont like the sound of the new big drivers and prefer the feel of a smaller more solid driver, this is what you should do, it is especially easy with an r7.

I think it made it about 10 grams heavier, possibly 12, but with the r7's its easy to compensate for.

Let me know if any of you try it.

15 cotton balls = 10-12 grams? Sure on that one? Good idea though for changing the sound. I have an Adams driver I may experiment with.

this is also a good way to make your TT shafts into Sensicore shafts

Using cotton balls is one of the oldest tricks in the book...better than hotmelt as it can be reversed.

cotton works great for deadening the sound and it does come out easy with air. i dont think a whole bag of cotton weighs 10 grams, you might have gotten 2 grams in there. you dont have to pack it in at all, a dozen or so is just fine. the trick is getting them into a head with no weight port. it doesnt really deaden the vibration but sure is easier on the ears

big cotton balls, it feels heavier to me and a friend, maybe its a mental thing.

Cotton balls are rolled up strips, so unroll them into about foot long strips and then tear that into longways thirds and just start pushing in.

YES! I tried it today and it is AWESOME. I love the feel it produces. NO loud ping. Crispy, composite like feel. No weight change because I used about 12 small cotton balls. They are not stuffed in tight but they lightly fill up the cavity.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiment. This club has now become the best feeling driver I have ever hit. Absolutely amazing.

Over time does all that centrifugal force make the cotton get smaller and move to one side and make it feel different?

The elastic "rebound" properties of cotton fibers are so great that they should not deform and pack into the toe of the driver. :D Maybe after about 20 years when the cotton starts to decay it might become a problem, but other that that I wouldn't worry.

Would that fall under "moving parts," thus violating the rules?

Moving parts rule.........That's a good question. I'm sure you're not going to see tour players shoving cotton balls in their club heads nor would I suggest anyone uses a packed head during any sort of ruled play. This being a violation is very probable.

The FT5 should have some sort of plug in the sole, you can take the plug out and feed in cotton

any idea how to do this without harming the plug....i dont have my driver in my hand but i think you are talking about the small rubber plug is the hole gonna be big enough?

Another easy trick (probably not quite as effective) is to put a small rubber o-ring washer on one or 2 of the MWT screws (r7) and tighten it down. Adding just a little rubber o-ring washer is all it takes. Doesn't matter which weights you use. Easy to reverse too.

I put a small rubber washer on each of the weights on my Superquad and it made a significant difference in the sound. Much, much better.

Cool... I'm glad it worked for you. And if it doesn't it's easy to reverse it. Couldn't begin to tell you how to get cotton out. Just try to find the smallest rubber O-ring that will fit the MWT screw.

I was a little hesitant to stuff a bunch of cotton balls into my driver just to deaden the sound. What if I didin't like the outcome and I couldn't get the cotton out. The rubber washers are a much easier way, and it can very easily be removed.

  • 2 weeks later...
Has this been tried with an FT-5 yet? I'm wanting to try this with mine but im not sure how to get the plug out and put it back in. Is this something a major retail store could do?

ive been wondering the same thing....anybody tried this with the ft-5
