Scratch Wedge grind help...

Can someone please explain the difference between the Scratch retail wedge grinds? There is a store near me that is selling them for $130.00 new. Sounds like a good price to try these wedges for a longer period of time to get a better idea of how they feel & perform. This is assuming that the retail wedges feel the same as the custom wedges.. but just have different grinds.

So yeah, can someone please tell me the difference between the grinds and let me know which swing type is best for each grind? I have visited the scratch website but the difference between grinds seems kinda vague on there. I need details so that I don't spend money on something that isn't "right for me".

The JLM wedges are the exact same as the Tour Department wedges they are hand ground from the exact same raw heads they are just premade to one of our 5 grinds. The Tour Department has 18 different grinds and many more options. Here is a general guideline for our JLM wedge grinds.

 

*SWEEPER/SLIDER*

The Sweeper/Slider is someone who sweeps the ball off the turf taking little to no divot. This players swing is shallow and their main mishit is pretty much always thin.

 

PDG Grind

The PDG grind is our grind for the S/S swinger. It has a very low effective bounce angle and a large amount of camber. This allows the wedge to get down into the ball without biting into the turf. The lower bounce angle allows the wedge to get down to the ground without bouncing off the turf into the ball causing a thin shot. The camber makes the wedge want to stay above the ground instead of biting upon contact which greatly reduces the chance for this player to make solid contact. This wedge is designed to work for every shot you need to hit around the greens including all sand and flop shots as well as any fuller shot with the face square.

 

 

*DRIVER/SLIDER*

The Driver/Slider is our middle of the road swing type. This player hits down on the ball slightly but does not have an extremely steel angle of attack. They take a consistent divot but not a huge deep one. The D/S can mishit both thin and fat depending on the lie and swing.

 

TNC Grind

The TNC grind is our best all around D/S grind. It has a medium effective bounce angle and crescent shape relief cut into the center of the trailing edge. This relief allows it to play like a thinner sole wedge when the face is square while allowing the fuller heel and toe to increase its effectiveness from the sand and deeper rough. It is designed for fuller shots and shots with the face square. It is also great from the sand.

 

EGG Grind

The EGG grind is the most versatile D/S grind for hitting different shots around the greens. It has a medium effective bounce and very aggressive relief in the heel, toe and trailing edge. This relief allows the leading edge to stay low to the ground no matter what angle the face is played. It is specifically designed for hitting flop shots or other shots with the face open or closed. It also has enough bounce to be effective from the sand. If you are looking for versatility and you like to hit flop shots this is your wedge.

 

 

*DIGGER/DRIVER*

The Digger/Driver is the very aggressive, very steep swinger. This player hits down and through the ball very aggressively and takes very large divots. The Digger/Driver's mishit is pretty much always fat.

 

SND Grind

The SND grind is our D/D grind that is designed for fuller shots and shots with the face square. It has a high effective bounce angle and very little to no camber. The flatter sole allows the wedge to bite into the ground with the steeper natural swing of the D/D but the high bounce brings the sole back out of the ground. This wedge is designed for anyone who needs help reducing their fat mishits.

 

SFU Grind

The SFU grind is our more versatile D/D grind. It has a high effective bounce angle with very little to no camber and aggressive relief on the heel and toe. The flatter sole and high bounce angle help to prevent digging while the relief allows the club to be opened without the leading edge coming up off the ground. This wedge is the perfect solution for anyone with a very steep aggressive swing that needs versatility around the greens. You can hit any kind of flop shot with the face open or you can play the face square and you do not need to worry about the wedge digging too much.

Exactly... but a day or two ago I was arguing over a $300 price tag. I have found a retail price of $130 (same as any cleveland, titleist, taylor made, etc...) and I think that I would like to have a couple of Scratch wedges in my bag for that price. So that is why I am curious about the grinds.

Thanks for the detailed break down Ari. I guess I will be looking at the EGG design. Only comes in 60* though eh?

 

As soon as I get my tax refund you guys might be seeing a post about how the Scratch wedges are the best (as far as retail price goes)... I still might not agree that spending $300 for one is a good idea though.. *remember, this is my opinion according to experience and financial spending habits*... we will see in time.

If, for some reason, you don't like them buy something different. You can't take the money with you when you die. Have you ever seen a Brink's truck following a hearse?
