Cofessions Of a Club Ho...

Recommended Posts

I think that I have an OCD
This is my first unofficial post, I have taken about 30 pictures of my clubs and bag that were going to be in my first post. It's late and I am bored...so I am just going to tell it like it is. I have been playing golf for about 7 years now and I have owned too many clubs to count...it is almost embarrassing to list how many clubs I have owned. Over the past 3 years my scores dropped from the 120s to the mid to high 80s. During that time, I went thru a BUNCH of clubs...for example:

(6) Drivers (Adams, PING, Cleveland, Dunlop, Callaway)
(8) 3-Woods (Dunlop, Callaway, PING, TaylorMade, knockoffs)
(9) 5-Woods (Sonartec, Titleist, Adams, TaylorMade, Cobra, etc)
(2) 7-Woods (blah, blah)
(5) Hybrids ( more blah, blah)
(2) 2 Irons ( Tommy Armour 845s Titanium, PING G2 HL)
(5) Sets of Irons ( Tommy Armour 845s, Spaulding (old set), Bob Toski irons, PING i3 O-size, PING G2
(10) Wedges ( Cleveland, PING, Nike, Carbite, blah, blah)
(7) Putters ( Odyssey, Nike, PING, Bobby Grace)
(3) Golf bags

All this in 3 YEARS!!! And I sucked during this time. I also have about 20 headcovers that I used to change about 10 times a week. I was never satisfied with my clubs. I read too many articles that told me what I needed to BUY to fix my game instead of what I needed to DO. The first thing I did was take lessons and get fitted for my equipment... ALL OF IT. After countless shaft combos, length changes, 1 degree this, 2 degrees that, grips with extra tape under them, cord vs, multicompound and tons on lead tape I just gave up. I stopped experimenting. I sold, traded and gave away all the lose baggage (stupid, stupid me...I lost a BUNCH of money). This is what I game now ( I try to stay away from Dick's, Golf Galaxy and the Pro Shop around the corner from my house);

Driver- PING G2 10* TFC 100 Stiff 44"
Backup- Cleveland HiBore 10* Fujikura Stock...it was a gift...now I am confused again
3-Wood- PING G2 14* Graffalloy Prolaunch Blue Stiff 42.5" Green Dot
Hybrid- PING G5 22* Aldila NV 65 Regular
Irons- PING i3 O-size (4-PW) JZ Cushin Steel Stiff Blue Dot
AW- Cleveland 588 GM 53* (bent to 52)
SW- Cleveland CG11 56*
Putter- Odyssey White Hot XG #9 34"
Back-up- MacGregor Bobby grac M5K V-Foil 35"
Ball- Callaway Big Bertha/ Titleist NXT
Bag- Nike Slingshot Cart (Black)

Soldiers that fell behind that I miss dearly;
Callaway Steelhead (THE BEST)
Sonartec SS-03 ( I have a BRAND NEW NEVER USED Sonartec NP-99 head for nostalgia)
Adams Redline (Best driver I ever owned)
Odyssey DF550
TaylorMade R580 fairway
PING G2i CRAZ-E (Great putter, could'nt stand to look at it)

I have no plans to change ANY time soon. I realized that it is not always what you play but how you play. Once I stopped changing clubs and focused on what I had instead of what I wanted my scores began to drop. I became comfortable with clubs and now I have no desire to change. Can you relate? I want to collect some nice putters but it would only confuse me...

in garage, front coat closet, and living room:

8 drivers, 3 driver heads, 4 driver shafts, 3 sets of irons, 11 FW woods, 1 set of iron shafts, 7 putters, 5 wedges, 3 backup sets of 14 clubs in bags ready to roll...half a dozen pair of golf shoes, about 200 used ProV's sitting in a basket...also, my garage is set up as an indoor driving range with a net and a mat...maybe I need my own launch monitor next? Hmmm....

my fiancee thinks I have a disease...

i think she's right...

i do agree with the previously mentioned theory of sticking with one set of equipment and working on the fundamentals of the swing, not the fundamentals of the equipment...it's just...they...are...so...cool...and...shiny......maybe...should...try...one...mo

In a recent pub quiz my wife answered a question wrong and was pretty upset by this..............."What is the maximum amount of clubs a golfer is allowed in their bag?" My wife wrote 19. Can't help but think why she thought this, my spare bag has 20 clubs in it, she must have miscounted!!! As long as I get rid of a club a new one can replace it, great trick!

Being that I'm only 17, and not married yet, I'm still in the clear for a while as far as the clubs go!

You all have taught me an important lesson though. When I meet my prospective wife, I'll make sure to warn her about my club ho'ing. If she's cool with it, well then gentlemen we have a winner! ;)

Definitely!

She better agree to give part of her paycheck toward the hoing if she wants to keep a roof over her head!

My wife doesn't care. Why would she?

I never understood why dudes' wives give them a hard time about something they enjoy. I could see if there was a bad financial situation but otherwise, I just don't get it.

Golf means time away from them. 5 hours in a round. Hours at the range. Meal time after rounds. Prep time before rounds. Time spent in golf stores. Time spent on online golfing websites. Time spent on this site. Tinkering with equipment while at home. Swinging the club at home when your wife tells you not to for fear of damaging furniture. The fact that most play during times where most families have family time.

Golf is also an excuse to do other things. My dad often tells my mom that he's going to play a round of golf, when he's actually at a nearby casino gambling. Who knows what else he does. He gets away with it too. 4 hours of "golf" can give yourself a lot of time to attend to other vices. I've heard about golfers cheating on their wives during their "round of golf".

Shame on anybody who says that they are going to play golf and NOT go. Because of my professional, I turn down more golf than I actually play. Golf is a way to reward myself for all that I do for everyone else. Lie about golfing...no way. The fresh cut grass, the dew on the greens after sunrise, the cart girls...somebody hand me a 1-iron...I 'm aiming at the flag ;)

Good Morning to you Fade2left,

It's so nice to know that I'm niot the only one who succumed to the "equipment junky syndrome".

I started out with a beautiful set Wilson forged RM (great cavity backs) then had a daliance with a few other sets until I lucked out and found a great set of Wilson FG49's crica mid 80's. Stunning blades

Then I started listening to too many people (far too many) and changed my irons to what I have now which (took me a long time to get used to) Founders Club forged 2000 irons 3-PW.

And now?????? I will never change until the sweet spot is worn away...

I suppose the moral of this story is that "it's not the Arrow, it's the Indian".

Alright, I have to ask. Since I own 5-6 Redline drivers.

If the Redline was the best driver you ever owned, why aren't you gaming one now?

And yes, I still game one.

Good question...my Redline was offset which caused me draw the ball...it was the longest driver that I ever hit. I like to fade the ball. The G2 and HiBore work for me now. Do you still game the M5K?

I played golf on Sunday with a few of my friends and my business partner. I am notorious for changing clubs.....I've gone through 6 drivers in the last month. I get on the tee box and we start joking around about how long I'm going to keep what I've got and if I'd make them a deal. My friends count on me to continually update their clubs. We start talking and realize that everybody in my group, from putter to wedges to driver, were playing my old clubs. Every club in all their bags at one point in time was mine.

At that point, I realized I might have a problem.

Titleist 915D2 9.5* Rogue Black 95MSI 60S
Callaway XHot Pro 15* Project X 6.5
Mizuno MP Fli Hi 2 Iron C-Taper X
Bridgeston J40CB 3-PW Project X 6.0
Ping Anser 54*,60* Project X 6.0
Taylormade Imola 8 35"

Yep .... the M5K is still my starter. I've tried some other putters, but nothing puts a "smoooooth" roll on the ball like the M5K. Also, I know this is hard to believe, but I sometimes miss the sweetspot. Even with my putter. But since I'm using a high moi putter, my misses aren't by a lot. If I do that with a blade style putter, I'll probably leave myself 4-5 footers. Yuck!!!

I need to update my witb though, right now I'm playing high lofted fairway woods due to the da*n s****s. If it weren't for them I'd probably have to quit golf. I have a set of F2 irons, and they're okay. But I seem to score better with the fw's.
