This is just laziness, fear of failure or both.

 

Yes! I don't think this has been mentioned but one of the reasons people take "gimmies" is because they're AFRAID of missing the putt.

I play with some guys and they all know I don't take gimmies. Well one day my friend rakes my ball back to me from about 18 inches. Oh boy did I lose it! I motioned like I was going to take his head off. I felt a little bad, but he knows the deal. He said after " Jeez, I will never touch your ball again". Yes, that's all I wanted.

If the course is empty, take all the time you want. If there is a group behind you, you can't be holing out every 1 foot putt.

The two issues are completely different.

 

Do the math (if you can handle it). How long does it take to address a 1 foot putt, make the stroke and retreive the ball from the cup. Then multiply that by a MAX (unlikely) of 18.

 

There are plenty of threads on the causes of slow play so I'm not going to go into them. But I assure you, holing out certainly is not one of those causes.

Holing out is a requirement of the game! Period. I can't believe this is even a discussion. It's like having the catcher tell you your run from third to home is "good, you can have it" and you peel off to the bench 3 feet from the plate. Good grief people.

True, it was very irrational...but that's just the point. One day someone is going to rake in someone's putt and end up in some major s...t because of it.

 

Just leave other people's balls alone. BTW, that's one of the things I like about golf, I think it helps with my rage!

I seem to get hooked up with guys like this all the time. Basically they putt once from 20 feet and if it doesn't go in they pick it up no matter how far from the hole. Kills me to see these guys pick up 6 footers and say "its good".

There are rules of golf which are different for match play and for stroke play. Match play provides for conceding putts; stroke play does not. See here: http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/rules.html

 

Play by the rules or not, it's up to you. Whether it's a "casual round", "to speed up play" or whatever, I know and have heard all types of rationalizations and excuses regarding the rules and handicaps. I completely understand the realities of playing with your friends, with your wife, in a tournament, on a busy muni or at a private club without "pace of play concerns". I understand why it might bug someone to knock a "gimme" putt back to me if I want to work on my short putts. However, it's hard to argue against well-intentioned attempts to maintain pace of play by conceeding 6" putts and "playing when ready" in informal rounds.

 

For what it's worth, however, for handicap purposes, there are many instances where a score is submitted without completing a hole or a round, e.g match play concessions; playing at least 13 holes but less than 18; picking-up in a better ball match when your partner has the better score so you record your "most likely" score for the hole in posting a score for handicap purposes.
