spitting, cursing, etc

I was reading the mailbag letters in the latest Golf magazine and was surprised to see how strongly negative some people's reactions were to Tiger's cursing and spitting during a round. I don't miss too many of his rounds when they are on TV and, come on, it's barely noticeable, if at all.

But that's besides the point; one guy even went as far as to say he does not consider him a role model. Unless he doesnt think any athletes in general are role models (which is fine), i think that's crazy-talk. Another guy railed against his not conceding a short putt in a match back in the day.

I'd like to not dismiss this opinion simply because I dont agree at all. Maybe there's something to it (no, there's not). Does anyone else find themselves offended by Tiger's behavior? No arguments, please. Just want to know what people expect from someone as driven and focused and HUMAN as Tiger.

We see him spit and curse more because he is on camera ALL THE TIME. Everyone does it. Some even more than he. Those people are just looking for excuses to hate on Tiger.

 

You can catch Boo (and some others) with a fat dip in spitting that out all the time. That's not good for kids to watch.

 

You can also hear an occasional F Bomb from anyone at anytime. That's not good for kids to hear.

by that rationale lets get rid of about 90% of the posts in here. not everyone has been posting and following the posts everyday for months; years, etc. I'm bored at work and just wanted to hear some opinions. but thanks.

Tiger also raised the issue that because he is on camera all the time, joe public gets to see every single indiscretion whereas for the rest of the field the might only have the cameras on them 10-15% (unless you're Ernie or Phil) so they are pretty unlikely to get caught swearing.

 

Me, I think he's a great role model for life in a goldfish bowl of media attention and I'm amazed at how controlled he is and how little he actually goes off.

i know what you're saying, but i would think it's more dangerous (or nonsensical) to try to shield kids from the reality of competition and competitive hunger. kids know what curses are not too long after they learn to say "dada"; knowing them and using them inappropriately are two different things. and really, the fact that some four letter words have been universally designated as "bad" words is pretty silly in itself.

no, i know what you're saying. ive only been on the site for a few weeks so im still finding my way. and i actually do have a ton of work to do; which has again taken its rightly place second in line to golf.

Yes TW gets caught on TV more than the others, but to use them as an excuse is not a justification. They are just as guilty. I try my hardest to never curse even when it is cursing myself for a bad shot. It is disrespectful to the peopel you play with. Curse yourself in your mind for all I care,

You should have heard the things coming out of Michael Letzig's mouth at the Travelers Championship. I almost felt like telling him to go to hell on one of the tee boxes because there were little kids that were following him around. He said stuff that would make a sailor blush.

 

Tiger's occasional "godda**s" and "Jesus Ch!sts" are nothing compared to some of these guys.

I don't think Tiger is sounding like a young Eddie Murphy, but I'm pretty sure the other players do the same. They just aren't on TV as much to be caught in the act. However, I think it's better to let one slip out once in awhile than hit your club on the nearest rock or break it over your shoulders like some of the other players do.
