Near Breckenridge

Does anybody have suggestions for courses in this area?

We played Breckenridge Elk/Beaver a couple of months back, before the rates went way up. Great courses, very photogenic as long as you ignore all the dead Lodgepole pines. Take lots of balls and have fun, it is cart path only for all holes. Nicklaus design, from the tips it is one of the toughest in the state. I've never been in so many bunkers.

Very good course. I played there one week after they opened the Elk nine several years ago. Very good course. Another good course with lots of elevation is Raven at Three Peaks. One course that I thought is fun, but not necessarily good or challenging, and definitely not long is Copper Creek at Copper Mountain. Its the elevation that gets you there, as it is 9712 ft. at the clubhouse. I am sure that you get to 10,000 somewhere on the golf course.

Breckenridge Beaver was 9426 feet at its high spot. Funny I didn't notice the ball going much further, then again by the time I walked up hill to the tee box, I was out of breath.

Lakota Canyon is also a highly rated course just west of there.

Breckenridge is cart path only, something to consider at that elevation if you aren't in shape.

 

Not just something to consider if you aren't in shape, it's something to consider if you aren't used to elevation at all. My house sits at 117 ft. above sea level, so its quite an adjustment for me. Its easy to get winded doing just about anything with no air to breathe.

I went from 3000 ft. to 9000+ in a mater of hours and am in good shape. I was constantly out of breath up there. It would be best to stay a night before you play and drink lots of fluids. I couldn't tell if the ball flew much further due to the cool temps and my being out of breath!

I'd play Elk for sure, we played Beaver also, Bear (never played it) is supposed to have wider fairways. Take lots of balls and have fun!

Lakota Canyon is also a highly rated course just west of there.

 

Lakota is a descent Jim Engh Design, but it is at least an hour west of Summit County.

FYI, The cart path only restrictions at Breckenridge were lifted in the 2009 season unless the course is extremely wet. However, they generally restrict carts to the paths on one rotating par 4 or 5 per nine just to limit wear and tear. Maintaining their great turf at that elevation is challenging-there are only about 30-40 days a year when Summit County does not have frost.
