Flatter Lie Angle In Short Irons

Why would a fitter recommend this set up??

I went to a Titleist demo day this afternoon and the rep suggested going with a flatter lie angle in my short irons. Specifically, he recommended a 1* upright 4-7 and std lie for 8-GW (Ap1 irons). The rep was pretty busy so I didn't get the full details for the rationale for this recommendation, so I thought I'd ask for the thoughts of the group.

Do anyone have any thoughts on his fitting? Would the 1* make a noticable difference? Thanks for the help.

Do you tend to drag your short irons to the left? This would be a possible reason.

There is the principle of face plane tilt and shaft droop to consider. At impact the shaft droops toe down and flattens the lie angle effectively and this is more prominent the longer the shaft as in mod to long irons. this is why a correctly fitted set will be slightly toe up at address but face plane tilt will, especially the more lofted the club and even with the leading edge square to the ball to target line, aim off target. with lower lofts and appropirate droop the effect is negated but on a lofted club a one degree too upright club could aim as far as 9 yards off target. Tour players, i could be wrong in thinking ballesteros was one of the first, have done this for years and as it noticeably creates a pull in short irons so with a progressively flattening lie they can release fully through impact without holding the club face off excessively

I play all my long irons from 4-5 3° upright lie, my mid irons 6-7 2° upright lie and my shorter irons 8-PW 1° upright lie.

My wedges are standard lie. All are fitted with ½" longer shafts though.

 

I tend to play my wedges very steep and if I don't order them with a more flat lie, I will hook them. My longer irons are more upright in lie, or I'll tend to slice them more, because longer irons are played less steep then the shorter irons because of the nature of our build and the way we swing the golf club.

 

I used to play my wedges the same as my irons, but then used a Midsize grip with 3 layers of tape to prevent the hook, when I hit my wedges.

A thicker grip will normally provoke a more sliced swing - thus the midsize grip equalized the too upright lie in my wedges :black eye:

I do this as well. 2 up in the 2/3 irons, 1.5 up in the 4/5 irons, 1 up in the 6/7 irons, 1/2 up in the 8 iron, std in the 9/PW, and 1/2 flat in the SW.

 

 

Why? it works for me. My static is 1/4" over, 2 up, but if i have my shorter irons anywhere near 2 up, its pull city.

In the art of the short game it says long irons upright because you never want to leave on right, and flat wedges because you never want to leave one left. If I fit straight standard for everything, what should I do to get this set up. 1 degree up on 3,4 iron; wedges one flat?
