Odd situation, rules question

At my home course there is a green cut on the side of a hill with a bank behind the green sloping back down to the green. The scenario! The ball plugs in the bank behind the green. When you take a drop it rolls towards the green and it will not stay on the bank and rolls towards the green when it is placed. What now? :black eye:

I had this happen to me 2 years ago. E mailed the USGA, you need to find the closest spot, no closer to the hole where the ball will stay put. I my situation the ball rolled very close to the hole, my partners said to play it, but I knew that was incorrect. Find the nearest spot.

Is the bank part of the fringe, meaning is it closely mown? I'd like to know the answer to this one. I wonder if one is allowed to make a very minor indentation when you place the ball to make it stay.

No, you are not allowed to press the ball down to make it stay.

 

 

Rule 20-3d. Ball Fails to Come to Rest on Spot

 

If a ball when placed fails to come to rest on the spot on which it was placed, there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced. If it still fails to come to rest on that spot:

 

(i) except in a hazard, it must be placed at the nearest spot where it can be placed at rest that is not nearer the hole and not in a hazard;

 

(ii) in a hazard, it must be placed in the hazard at the nearest spot where it can be placed at rest that is not nearer the hole.

 

If a ball when placed comes to rest on the spot on which it is placed, and it subsequently moves, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies, unless the provisions of any other Rule apply.

That's what I thouht, but in this case it may be in front of the green!!!

4ems asked the most important question about the situation because unless you were taking an unplayable you do not get relief under the embedded ball rule if the ball was in rough here. You now ONLY can take relief under the embedded ball rule if the ball lies in fairway, green or tee situations.

In hindsight, it sounds like the OP might have been better off leaving the ball plugged and playing from there. Just hit the ball out of the hole and let roll down to the green. Of course, the feasibility of this idea depends on the exact nature of terrain.
