The reason you can taper a .370 shaft to fit a .355T hosel is the shaft is only tapered in the last 5/8". The shaft is .365 where it exits the hosel - and many hosels are actually .370 already at the open end.

 

Trying to thin down a .370 tip shaft to fit into a .350 parallel hosel is a bad idea. Most shafts will fail - though very thick walled shafts might work...

I completely agree with witt on this one, wouldn't touch it as a club maker, you are asking for trouble!

The V2 hybrid shafts are designed to be sanded down. Have you seen how thick the tip is? Titleist sands them down to fit the 585.H. If they do it, it has to be ok. I have sanded down NUMEROUS V2 hybrids, and not one of them has broken. After all, you are only sanding down 2 one hundredths of an inch.

I doubt very much that the .370 tip V2 hybrid shafts are actually designed to be sanded down, but I'll be sure to ask when I place my next UST order.

 

The fact that someone does it and gets away with it notwithstanding, I would not recommend it unless the shaft tip is very thick, and even then it would not be my first or even my second choice.

.020" is not a trivial thickness when you are talking about cutting that much graphite fiber. That's 4-6 layers in the layup, and for comparison, it's the same as 6 layers of standard .0035" masking tape.

 

It's much safer to shim a .335 hybrid shaft into a .350 hosel then to sand a .370 shaft down.

Remember you have to ream the ferrule also to fit the top 370 diameter area by the ferrule. Remember, callaway have a part of the ferrule went in at least around 1/2" inside the hosel.

 

Shaving it down to 350 on V2 thick wall is not a biggie for this head if you do it evently. If you didn't do it evently, the club head will/might sit with different lie and loft after installed.

 

If you can ream the ferrule to a 370 diamater ( important to ream it evently and straight ), that means just only about 3/4" at most from the tip that you need to taper it to 350, plenty of strenght on the top. Make sure the tip plug filled with enough glue too.

 

Of course the proper by the book is to REAM the head to 370 (not drill).

 

Just make sure your clubmaker know what he is doing! ( use his brain, not his certificate on the wall :jester: )
