Regrooving Irons (??)

hello i was wondering if you could help me out with a question. i was wondering if irons are regrooved does it do anything negative to the irons (such as throw off the balance of the club)? how is the regrooving actually done (do you basically take a layer off the club and then regroove the club)? i've heard pros and cons about iron regrooving...and i know that some tour players are playing Ping Eye II irons and other older, legacy clubs and probably have work done to them. thank you - really like the site

theres a tool that people on this site like....I think it has Willy in the name. Willys groove cleaner maybe. I read an article yest. or 2day that said all it did was remove the "bent" metal in the grooves. It didn't alter the grooves or deepen them or anything too serious. As to how its done.....just run a flat screwdriver looking thingy in the grooves from heel to toe I believe.

As above, a regroove basically involves clearing out the body of the groove and removing the metal from the turned edges that droops into the groove cavity over time. A good regrooving will also spruce up the groove edges too to restore some of their sharpness. Done properly, it'll make a tangible difference to the worn club's performance - particularly in grassy and wet conditions.

 

The club will be unaffected in terms of swingweight/balance/call it what you will since the amount of metal (and weight) removed is very small. The only downside is with chromed clubs where the regroove will expose the groove edges by removing the nickel and chrome layers which will result in rust forming over time along the groove edge. That said, a regroove only requires the worn area of the face being remedied and, in the case of a club that's significantly worn, that part of the face will generally be showing signs of browning at least, and in many cases will have a raw spot. It is not necessary to regroove the whole face as some dimwits I've seen have done. That does look a mess.

 

Tools can be picked up pretty cheaply and the actual task is as easy as falling off a log provided you don't drink a load of ale beforehand. Basically, as stated above, they look like a screwdriver and are worked through the groove to achieve the desired result.

 

Edit: Some manufacturers (e.g. Ping) advocate that a proper regroove requires skimming of the face to remove any concavity in the sweet spot area from ball/turf contact. Personally, I think it's bunkum and an excuse to get people to buy new clubs since I've used regrooved irons for years with horrendous sweet spot wear in many cases and have never had problems with balls squirting off in odd directions as a result of the bullseye marks. A tool, properly used, does a great job and will massively prolong the life of an iron.
