Speaking of cracked up... My R7 425 cracked out on the high end of the toe. I can't have hit more than 50 balls with it. Swingspeed is in the 105-115 range so no undue stress seems to have been put on the head. I'm not stirring the pot, just an FYI for 425 owners out there. I snapped a quick one with the camera phone when I returned it.

Wow man!?!? :cheesy:

That is a bummer. Puching the envelope on those designs. Pros and Cons.

Well I have owned vertually every TM driver to date and I have told a lot of close friends the retail non tp 425 is a cannon. I tell you it is a great head.

Cant understand why they havent put them in play yet.

When I had the retail version on the launch monitor, it was coming back with SOLID figures. The stock shaft even felt really good compared to past TM shafts. Still not planning on picking one up anytime soon though...I'll just wait until John sells me his unused TP version next year! :cheesy:

Speaking of the TP version, have you had a chance to compare the two yet?

I have played the 500 series the R5, R7 and the 425. It would seem to me at this point TM now realizes it has a fantastic following with all of their over priced drives and will pop out a new one every 4-6 months for all of the TM fans to drool over. The 510 TP was a fantastic club. After that, they are all about the same, lots of hype, here today replaced tomorrow.

I've got s R7 425 TP with a V2 tour & I must say I love it. I've been playing & practicing with a few Nationwide & PGA Tour guys at the TPC in Tampa where I practice & play out of when I'm here for the winter & theres a few non TM guys playing it & they love it. I don't know why everyone is hating on this driver. IMHO it's a world better than the original.

Love my R7 425 TP. Had the R7 Quad TP w/ Fuji Speeder stiff and it was my favorite driver, though I am not a huge TM fan (going back to the Firesole days). Tried the 425 TP with both the 65 and 55 Rombax shafts in stiff. I have to tell you: I was shocked at how much I like the 55! Although lightweight, it isn't whippy like other 50-gram shafts. With a little weight adjusting, it really does feel wonderful.

I've had 2 Tour 425's and was not impressed by them in the least bit..Both had Reax 75X shafts that felt like they must have been tipped, cuz I'd really have to step on it just to get it loaded right..Low hitting for a 9.5°, my preference is still the r7 over the r5 and this driver..Just to tinker I put the Rombax 75x in my gamer r7 400c head and it wasn't pretty- so it could be the shaft, however I'm not convinced it's THAT much better than the original r7's yet...

Look at Titleist as another example. 983s stayed in bags a LONG time after the 905 S and 905T were introduced. I'm sure there's still plenty of 983s in play.

If you're placing in the money and feeling a lot of confidence in your driver, changing for the sake of just playing what's new is tuff. If they do switch so they can have the OEMs new club ITB and then start to struggle a bit it's natural to wanna go back to the "old" driver. They had a lot more time to dial in the older one. Doesn't necessarily mean the new stuff sucks. Maybe just needs some tuning.

Kinda OT but it seems that most of the 905s being played on tour now are the Rs. Perhaps the S and K really just weren't that great?

I don't understand why TM would force pros to play a certain shaft. Wouldn't they just take the popular shafts on tour and put their own paint job on them, as they've done previously with the NV, 757, Diamana, etc.? That way the casual consumer most likely thinks they are playing the same shaft as the pros. It worked with the original r7, why wouldn't they do that now?

I can't tell you how many Taylor Made and non Taylor Made pro's were using the R7 425 at the FBR Open. I've had since early January and I think it's a great driver. Now, that I saw so many pro's using the R7 425, I'm convinced that I made a great buy. By the way, I couldn't believe how many pro's are using the new Golf Pride grip that is black and red (new Decade mulit compound).

Jon,

Good to see you back posting! Hope the winter in Tampa is going well. From one hockey guy to another, you have a standing invitation to Franklin when you're back in MA.

Best of luck.

I don't know if everyone knows this or not, but a lot of the TP heads are not square and are in fact, .25-.50 degrees closed. I know they look a lot better than most retail heads, but make sure that you have the face angle measured. I have a lot more confidence knowing that my head is square, and being a hooker of the ball, love when the head is set open. The tour heads can be bent fairly easily. I have the R7 Shallow Tour Head and just love this club. Just some FYI!!

The reason they switched back has nothing to do with the club head... its a great golf club...

they switched back because they both use mitsubishi shafts, and the 425's have Fuji's in them...

Is TM tour really keeping the 425 out of pros hands if they don't want one of the REAX shafts in it? I can see where TM and Fuji. struck a deal and therefore want to keep those 2 products exclusive, but come on. The reax. is a nice shat but obv. won't fit everyone. They better start doin' a bunch of "knock-off" versions of other shafts in the reax paint scheme if they really wanna get it out there.
