J.B. Homes: Hype or not?

This guy's impressive. It may be too early to tell but do you think he'll be a force on tour?

Not!

Let's see--- 250 yards to green....into the wind.....Holmes hits a 4 iron to the center, makes eagle. All with a few holes to go, early in his rookie season, one stroke lead! :drinks:

I agree that he has loads of talent, and a resume to back it up, but I think some of the excitement was a little premature. I think they, the media, are so starved for someone to compete with Tiger that they went a little overboard. Keep in mind he's only played in 2 events. Stock-up as Dickey V would say.

He's for real. He had a lot of top guys breathen down his back before he started the 4th round and held them all off. Even after Ryan took the lead, he still fought back and regained it. Look at what he's done in the past year alone. Obviously, he has a long way to go to complete with the likes of "EL Tigre" on a regular basis but not a bad start so far this year.

The other thing to look at is his swing. He hits it a frickin' mile with tremendous control because his backswing is short of parallel at the top. He can't get too loose, as many other bombers get. His swing stays connected which helps with control. Peter did a nice piece on his iron play with the slow mo camera on his wedge into 16. He explained that his swing is condusive to consistent trajectory and distance control because he controls his shaft angle at impact.

I just played the TPC and trust me when I tell you, where he hit some of those drives is ridiculous. I played it set up exactly like this tournament and from the tips. The 14th hole is 477 uphill and was into a slight breeze today. When I played there 2 month ago, I hit my drive 305 and still had 4 iron to a back left pin. The pin was up today but he still hit 8 iron into it. 8 IRON. That's illegal. I hit my drive on 18 and had 128 left with a wedge......he had 77 yards to the back right flag. His drive flew the 325 mark by 20 yards. That's big. I'm not typically blown away by bombers because I can move it pretty well myself but some of the places he was......well....REAL IMPRESSIVE.

Good luck JH....keep 'em flying high and congrats.

we honestly dont know yet, tons of one hit wonders who had a hot streak in their careers and have hit rock bottom, let me see 3 or 4 more wins this year, and Ill start to beleive this kid is near Tiger's league :ok:

Yeah i agree with this post, dude has lots of talent but still hasn't had the tiger breathing down his neck :D . But with what i seen today in Phoenix looks pretty promising but only time will tell. What a swing though :drinks: how doe's he generate that much speed with such a short backswing? ;) I'm really hoping that he is the real deal to put some heat on Tiger :pimp: Gets old watching him beat everyone like he owns them :crazy2: Tiger's talented but he's still human------------I THINK ;)

He seems to have separated himself from the recent spate of loooong hitters by demonstrating a great short game and an excellent touch with the flatstick.

I was watching TGC's "Post-Game Report" and both analysts were saying that J.B. wouldn't fare well at the U.S. Open because of the "tight fairways". Hello? Did they not see the guy bobm it 350 and straight as an arrow? McCord was doubly impressed with the kid because he hit it so long and so straight.

However...I won't go overboard like Feherty did, and assail him as the next coming of Tiger Nicklaus. But he could be good...really good.

Real deal, but he's no "Tiger Slayer". We'll see what he does at Augusta in a few months!

I agree with the general consensus, he's obviously got a lot of game, and he hits the ball so far, and so straight, but has a good short game to go with it. I'm excited to see what he does at Augusta and in some of the bigger tournaments (Majors, World Golf Championships, Players Championship, etc.).

At Augusta in a few months? Unless I am mistaken the win in Phoenix will not qualify him for this years Masters. Did he qualify some other way?

I agree I think he is the real deal as long as he doesn't start messing with his swing. I also agree with the way the Master's is lengthening the course, he will be one of the few who will be able to give Tiger a run for his money.

He needs to be in the Top 10 on the PGA money list (a week before the Masters) or make his way into the Top 50 in the World Rankings- hasn't done either yet.

I can't help to think that we had this same discussion last fall about a guy by the name of Jason Gore. That discussion had him in the top 10 in the world by the end of this season.

In my opinion this discussion is all too early. Lets let the golfers golf and let their record stand for themselves. One win early in a rookie season does not make a career.

I wish JB all the best, Keep it up and good luck.

That was just AMAZING! :crazy2::pimp:

He's basically done to golf what Micheal Jordan did to basketball which is change the physical dimensions in terms of how the game is played. Basically THERE ARE NO PAR 5'S FOR J.B. HOLMES! And he has the capability to turn short par 4's into par 3's.

The true test of any pro is CONSISTENCY. This guy already had one top 10 finish before the FBR Open and he won the Q-School tourney by SHOOTING ALL SIX ROUNDS IN THE 60'S. To top all that off he's FOURTH in scoring average so far this year at 68.82 strokes per round.

In short he's off to an impressive start to his PGA career.

I love his short swing, it's reminscent of mine. I almost never slice or hook the ball, it's only when I try to get all "John Daly" that I snap-hook it. People always remark as to how good I am off the tee, as far as a straight flight path.

As soon as my range opens for the season, I'm gonna try to emulate "The X Factor" and J. B.'s extreme hip turn. That's the drawback to hitting it so straight: my carry is only about 210-215 unless I absolutely flush it.

Still, I'd rather be 210 straight down the fairway than 250 but 20 yards into the trees and rough.

I TiVO'd the tournament, I'm gonna download J.B.'s swing and see what I can pick up.
