Not really a equipment topic but couldnt find a place for it on this site.

Anyway my question is this.

I think my wife might be surprising me with a weekend getaway at Pinehurst Resort and a round on Number 2. Do they have carts or do you have to walk? Do they provide caddies?Dont want to carry my staff bag. and last but not least how is the course.

I am a 8 or 9 handicap will I do horrible on this course?

Any input would be appreciated thanks.

I played #2 back in 1988 so it was awhile ago but it is a fantastic experiance!! BUY ALL MEANS GO! Pinehurst (the town) is wonderful and surrounding courses are nice as well. Of all of the golf destinations to go to it ranks at the top of my list. I do not know if your wife is going but if she is a non golfer the charm of the place will blow her away ( if it is anything like it was when I was there). Have a blast !!

I do not remember if carts were available or not, I took a caddy in any event and suggest you do the same if you are able, stunning course to walk.

Pinehurst #2 is a golf experience that you will find very enjoyable. The course does not present itself as overwhelming and won't be if you play from the right set of tees. At this time of year there is no rough.

There are carts available but I would suggest getting a caddie. He will be helpful with pin positions and how to get to the pins more than in any other way and will save you some strokes.

The course is easy to walk and I think you will remember more of the round by walking.

Pine Needles is another Ross course just down the road where the US Women's Open was played. It is also worth playing. Through February, Pine Needles has a special package available: stay one night in the Lodge,free breakfast and a round of golf for $105. That's half of what they normally charge just to play a round.

i just got to play it today, i elected not to have a caddy or cart but thats because i didn't want to pay for it. the course is amazing, and an 8 hdcp can play anywhere, but there are multiple tees. The best part is just knowing the history of the course, the whole place is amazing!

Well my home course here in NC right down the road from Pinehurst is also a donald ross design and it is called PineCrest country club. So I can say that I have played a ross course before.

They have caddies and carts. Unless you are too shy/insecure to have a caddie with you (but you shouldn't, because no matter how poorly you play, believe me, they have seen worse) you should take a caddie and walk. The caddie should be able to help you with green reading etc. Enjoy!

Caddie is a must do - yardages and green readings are very important. Also, when we were there it was cart path only and I bet the guy who played with us walked more than we did.

I played it on Dec 31 1999 (what a way to finish the century!!). My wife came around with me and really enjoyed the place. She took lots of pics of the course and the village in general. we rode in a cart, mainly so she could relax. It's not that tough a course, when it's set up for regular play. when it's shaved down for a US Open I'm sure it's a completely different experience.

Great course, very playable. Pinehurst is a lovely spot.

I have played #2 at least 30-40 times in my life and if I had only one course to play the rest of my life #2 would be at the top of the list. I love the course, clubhouse and the village. Go with the caddy and enjoy. Play the right tees and you will remember every hole after you play. There are not too many courses you could say that about. Im jealous. :drinks:

I played the course last week. Course was in good shape for this time of the year. They overseeded the fairways and greens were rolling around 10. They have a special this month-$256 which includes a round at #2, lodging and breakfast.

In regards to cart vs caddie. No question, go caddie. Fee is about $40.00. Tip expected to be around $35.00. If you get a caddie ask for Bobby Hill. Great caddie, 44 years of experience and knows the greens like the back of his hand.

I have not played number 2, but Pinehurst is a great town. Many little shops to just walk around and look at how expensive things are that I can't afford. And I think the golf shop still has a HUGE sale on 2005 merchandise. Also, make sure you check out the fitness and swing analysis lab. All the cameras and technological equipment they have there is amazing.

I would agree that Tobacco Road is almost an excellent course. I played it a couple weeks ago and will be posting many pictures of it soon.

having a caddie is a must. the greens can be very tricky. however, overall the course is very playable.

As many have said it is an experience you'll never foget, especially with the caddies. I couldn't imagine taking a cart on that coure, it's such an easy and enjoyable walk. Another great caddie there is Charlie, I've had him at Pinehurst and Whistling Straits, he is full of stories and a good joe.

I'll be down in about two weeks and look forward to playing it again. It is always the highlight of my year. You'll be fine on the regular championship tees (not the open tees), I don't think they even have some of those open on a daily basis, but I could be wrong.
