Swing Speed Estimation

Take your total distance -5% for roll and this is your carry. Divide this by 1.75 and it should equal your ball speed. Now divide this by 1.5 and this is your swing speed. It's not exact science but will give you a rough estimate of where you stand.

Ex: 300 yards -5% = 285 yards (carry)

285 yards /1.75= 163 (ball speed)

163/1.5= 109 swing speed

Hope this helps.

Is this calculation limited to Driver?

Cos I have tried with my 6-iron calculation with the distance of 163 - 170 yards , my swing speed only 62 mph (without rolling).

While with my Driver 263 - 270 yards, my swing speed is 95 mph.

Any comments?

(p/s: To be more precise, I guess we have to take the new / range ball, wind & ground condition into consideration. Of course I agree that this is for a guidance for golfer w/o ss monitor.)

If you have a high Club Head Speed you need to lower your Spin Rpm to 1900-2100 for perfect distance 2400-2600 can be really sweet too, But if you have a lower Club Head Speed the Spin Rpm should be higher for climbing to achieve distance! again you really should go and get tested on a Launch monitor to really know what you are doing, and dont forget to look into using a good golf ball with spin or less spin depending on your results!

What is the 1.75 represent???

The 1.75 is the amount of distance (yards) the ball will travel per ball speed.

Ex: if your ball speed is 150 than your carry yardage would be 262.5 with a perfect smashfactor and in nuetral conditions.

Ex: If you swing 90mph and hit it pure realistically you could only carry the ball 236.25 yards.

90mph (Swing Speed)X 1.5 (Smash Factor)= 135 (Ball Speed)

135 (Ball Speed) X 1.75 (Carry Yards) = 236.25

It seems that this formula is quite a ways off from real life at these LPGA level swing speeds. IIRC, Annika Sorenstam had a swing speed of around 103 mph in her best years before she injured herself when she averaged around 270 yards roll and carry. Many of the shorter LPGA players are somewhere around 90 mph and they probably average something over 230+ roll and carry, and having seen a number of LPGA tournaments first hand, the shorter players tend to hit a low running draw with lots or roll. As a second check, using the 2.5 to 2.8 yards per each mph rule of thumb, a 13 mph difference between 90 and 103 mph translates to 32.5 to 36.4 yards

I don't see anyway a 90 mph swing results in a 236 yard carry, maybe 236 carry and roll.

i think if the launch angle and spin rates are optimized, it is possible for an LPGA player to carry 230 yards at 90 mph. this formula i gives you an idea of what your swing speed might be given that launch and spin rates are optimized.

So are you saying LPGA tour players don't have access to the latest club heads, shafts, and manufacturer tour staff to optimize their equipment? I'm saying that they have the best equipment available, the most up to date testing equipment, and the time and motivation to do the testing to get the best out of their swings.
