I want to go softer in flex. Is it advisable??

Just want some feedback from you guys that may have gone this route before. My current driver swing speed is anywhere from 101-105 mph. I normally use a stiff flex and if they are japanese clubs, I may even go to an X flex because they are consistently a bit softer than U.S. spec shafts. My question is whether it would be okay to go to a regular flex? I'm asking because I got to use a club that had a regular flex but tipped slightly and it just felt more easy to hit. I hit it longer than the stiff shafts I normally use but do give away a bit on dispersion. More importantly though is that I actually swing with less effort and still get the distance I expect. Unfortunately, when I do want to jump on the shaft a bit, directionality tends to suffer. I am told that I can still go with a softer flex but to get shafts with lower torque or shafts with a tetra axial weave much like the Graphite Design YSQ or Honma's ARMRQ shaft so as to minimize dispersion. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

 

Just in case it has any bearing on your suggestions, I still use steel shafts on my irons and they are stiff flex. For what it's worth and as a basis of measure, I carry 150 yards with the 9 iron. I'm not He-man strong but I don't think I'm short either. Just in case this info might be of use in factoring your suggestions.

I am actually in the same situation. I play stiff flex in my irons (graphite), stiff in my hybrids and my fairway woods, and a regular flex in my driver.

 

I have the real Fubuki in my driver, and have found that having a quality shaft in it decreases the loss of accuracy. In the mean time, I am able to swing MUCH more smoothly as I don't feel I have to try to crank it to get the max benefit of the shaft, which has helped in distance and accuracy. It is amazing how much smoother you can swing by playing down a flex. It is very much a mental thing, because you know that if you swing too hard, you will lose some accuracy, so you swing easier and smoother. I would give it a try.

I am doing it right now,I have Stiff in woods and hybrids,s300's in my irons and am playing a Nike with the stock regular shaft and hitting it better than I have ever hit another driver. I also have TM Tour Burner coming with a Ozik in firm flex that I am hoping works just as good with a little less spin.Like Wookiedog said, when I am on the tee box I know I have to be smooth or it wont be good and it really helps my tempo.Todd

Moving to a regular flex in my driver has been a great move for me. The shaft in my driver is a regular, but tip-stiff, with a higher loft head than my previous driver (Cleveland HiBore xl 9.5, red, stiff). This has produced my best and most consistant drives ever. As with the other posts, I don't feel like I have to swing out of my shoes to get a long drive. I would reccomend giving it a try.

Thanks guys. Your experiences seem to be consistent with mine. I'll try it on my back up driver first.
