Tip weights and and bore depth

I am confused

Take an example: If a club has a standard bore depth of say 1.5", and after butt trimming a shaft (from 45" to 44.5") I would need to insert a lead weight to maintain the swing weight.

My question is : if the lead weight is say 1" long cylinder,I insert this into the bore, then I have only 1/2" of bore depth left to insert the shaft-which obviously won't work.

I feel I am missing something in this whole weight tipping process and shaft insertion process.

Can experts here help me understand . I have never seen weight tips, but am guessing these are just solid cylinders, which would take up some of the bore depth. Obviously I have never reshafted a club either.

Here are examples of lead tip weights. They typically fit into the end of the shaft, depending on design.

There are two basic types of tip weighting a club.

 

The most common is to use tip weights (like the examples in the above link) that fit into the shaft itself. They don't sit in the bore below the shaft and take up space in the manner described in your example. There is a 'head' to the weights generally, but it is relatively small (<1/4") and has little effect upon effective shafting depths.

 

The second method of tip weighting relies upon the club head having a machined 'slot' beneath the bottom of the shaft bore, into which lead or tungsten weights can be placed to suit. These cavities are relatively rare and not found on many iron heads.

 

In the case of woods, the first example applies, and hot melt can also be introduced to the interior of most wood heads to add weight (and position weight) as desired. Lead tape is also a very common and simple way of adding small to moderate amounts of weight to a club.

Thank you guys for the explanations; One more question: Do the weights come in different models? i.e for graphite shafts for woods with .350 or .335 tips and graphite shafts for irons with.355 or .370 tips? Or does one have to make do with just a standard size and do "cut and file" jobs ? Where can one buy these?

They do come in various shapes, weights and sizes, yes.
