Guy's here a little secret great golfers are like good pitchers they don't play at one speed. they can have a 420 yard par 4 and hit a 75% driver then a 80% 7 iron with a cut etc.. Only when they have forced carry do they hit 115% it's rare this is what makes a pro.
I've often said: Pro pitchers can throw 90 - 100+ mph fastballs. How many of us can even get to 75 mph? Yet so many of us want to hit a golf ball as far as the pros..... Ain't gonna happen with a baseball and it ain't gonna happen with a golf ball either.

i used to play the Indian wells golf resort where in 2011 i beleive they had kj choi, phill, stephen ames and rocco mediate playing in the skins game. On the last hole 18 i seen rocco hit his tee shot to a spot where i constantly put my drives , it leaves you about 113 in with a funky down hill lie. not saying hes a big hitter but no slouch and i had no problem driving it a far under normal conditions versus tour conditions . look it up on youtube it was sponsord by lg

These guys aren't the freak athletes everyone thinks. Announcers go crazy over how freaky an athlete Gary Woodland is because he played D3 basketball. Come on....most guys out on tour are or were good HS athletes in other sports, not freaks of nature like Labron or Kobe. There is way more to golf than athletic ability. Tom Kite would likely hurt himself if someone threw a ball at him.

I'm not saying being super athletic doesn't help, I just think it's over played. Most golfers out on tour are between 5'8 and 5'11. Too much is made of their physical ability and not enough attention is paid to the fact that these guys have a mix, a mix mind you, of athleticism, determination, hard work and opportunity that have gotten them to where they are. Not athleticism.

I'm 14 and can carry my 6 iron the same as kj choi. The only problem is he is not swinging 100% and he uses forged clubs and I use cast. Kj can probably hit a 6 iron 190 if he wanted to.
Probably over 200 :)

That's still very impressive for your age!!

Keep working hard and the best to ya this season :)

Rocco is pretty short yardage wise versus other tour pros

I really dont think Choi is a legit 300 yard driver. Most of those guys when they show the track man numbers are only carrying it 270-280 range max, obviously some are higher like Holmes, Dustin Johnson, Ernie, etc., but most of them have such high driving distances because of roll. They get rediculous amounts of roll, plenty of people can hit it 300 with 30+ yards of roll.

As far as the numbers, most of them haven't surprised me. Like has been said there are still variables, some may be playing clubs with jacked up lofts versus others, Brian Gay must have something going on with his irons because he hits his driver nowhere.
Exactly. I've a lot a 300+ yard drives. I probably only carried them 240-250. Firm fairways, weather, altitude, everything comes into play.

any reasonably athletic person should be able to swing a driver 112 mph.
I would add young to that statement. Not many guys over 50 are swing 112+.
False. Any reasonably athletic person can throw a baseball...hit a volleyball...walk and chew gum....Swinging a driver at and above the PGA Tour average requires athleticism, flexibility, timing and body awareness which most people (including ELITE athletes) don't have...

Well said. Look at all the Elite Athletes in the Pro Ams who look like complete t**** swinging the club. These guys ARE in fact elite athletes, yet they look like a folded lawn chair when they swing!

Agree guys, what i meant to say is how many guys on the senior tour can swing 112+? Not many even guys who have played golf there whole lives and can easily shoot in the 60's.

You need to add a lot more than that. It was a dumb incorrect blanket statement you were responding to.

I don't think it's a dumb statement. Especially when you see the number of young good golfers well over that number. 112 seems perfectly reasonable for a fairly athletic person, provided that they have the right type of athleticism. That isn't elite speed.
