I am also looking for a weighted club, mostly to warm up and help with the flexibility. A good training grip on it is key.

I suppose I could just get a training grip and put it on an old club and just add weight to the bottom. But for ~$17CAD I found this thing: http://golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_GR0006_A_cn_E_96

I figure it would also double as a good snake whacking stick.

Can I go wrong?

wow second swing huh? won't be getting that one lol. I've started just swinging two clubs together about 30 times a day and I've already seen improvement in a little less than one week. my ball flight has gotten noticeably higher and I thing I may have picked up a yard or two in my irons. can't wait to see how this translates into my driver after a month or two :D

Can you learn to high jump 7' by only practicing jumping 6'6"?

Can you train your fast twitch muscles to swing the driver at 110mph, by practicing swinging something heavy at 90mph?

Research has shown that swinging something 10-12% LIGHTER will increase swing speed.

In his book, the Physics of Golf, Jorgenson stated that using gravity will increase swing speed up to 13%. What did he mean? Swing more up and down and not so flat and around. Sprinters will train running down hill to increase sprinting speed. How does that happen? Downhill you are using gravity. Apply that to golf speed traiining and swing on a downhill slope and you will train your fast-twitch muscles to swing faster.

Which is great, but you need to work with the weighted club as well to increase flexibility. So, what you should have said is you should do both and mix your training so that your muscles don't get used to your training regiment and you still see gains.

Why swing a weighted club to increase flexibility? For the past 5 months I have been following a golf specific workout plan, from a TPI certified trainer, and there ain't no weighted clubs and there ain't no stretching. Lots of dynamic golf specific motions.

Swinging a weighted club more than 10% of the standard club slows the swing. There are studies on this on the TPI website.

if i swing a weighted club 10 times, then swing my own club, i swing it faster. i don't see how using a weighted club is a bad thing

A lot of things are getting mixed up in this thread. I will try to separate them and explain:

Weighted Clubs:

I have personally used 'Momentus' training irons (now sold), and still own a Gary Player 'Heavy Hitter' driver. These GP drivers come in several weights up to 1,000g. But only Longdrive competitors are likely to be able to handle the 1,000g. beast.

They are all great warm up tools, and when used for hitting balls they do instil rhythm. They may be able to slightly build up one's strength but such is better achieved in the gym.

For rhythm / timing the opposite approach is to use the extremely whippy/ lightweight 'The Whippy TempoMaster' which I have also used, but I find it hard to work with.

So, to summarise, weighted clubs are for warm up / learning swing rhythm.

Lightweight Clubs:

These can either be headless clubs (i.e. gripped shaft) or a lightweight driver such as the ones I sell with 130g heads. (Normal driver head = circa 200g.) Headless clubs are great for swinging one handed. If you are right handed then swing normally, as fast as you can, with your left hand only. Then, using your right hand only, swing like a left handed player.

Lightweight drivers are to be swung with both hands on the grip, without striking a golf ball or by striking lightweight 'AmostGolf golf balls.'

Lightweight clubs are used for increasing swing speed by increasing the efficiency of muscle twitch fibres. Single handed swinging is also a great method for developing correct follow through using one's left hand only.

I hope that this makes matters clearer.
