polyester era '70's

Not sure if i fit the profile [47] but do remember getting the usual sporting goods gear like Nicklaus or Ram sets with top flite balls. What about you guys?

I played with my dad's hand-me-downs (60's era MacGregor blades and persimmon) from the early 70's up until the mid 80's when I was able to afford new gear.

 

I don't know about polyester! I probably wore jeans on the golf course into the 90's when I was able to afford to play at something other that the local muni.

In 1972 or 73 I purchased my first set of "professional" clubs, a set of MacGregor Custom Tourneys, 2-10 with persimmon woods, 1,3,4,&5. My first pair of real golf shoes were a pair of black and white Etonics with Kilties....where have the kilties gone, we need them back. Not sure if I had a sand wedge and don't remember the putter, as I was a ho way back then. that's only 15 clubs, by my count, well under the 22 club limit. How about the golf bag, popular at the course I play at the time was a Dunlap (I think) and the model was an Airliner. Definitely wore a lot of polyester (double knit), both shorts and pants, and died for the alligator logo of Izod for the golf shirts.

 

Those Tourneys were just great clubs. Had no stampings on the back, and just a number and MacGregor on the sole. They were stiff shafts, but for the life of me I can't remember the numbering system, I think 1 was stiff, but am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, that's just the way we are here. I know Hogan had the Apex 4 for stiff.

I didn't start playing till about 1981, but my Dad played a lot in the 70s with MacGregor MT Irons and Woods. My grandfather played and entire set of Wilson Staff Dynapower from the late 60s or early 70s. Top Flites were huge for the Avg golfer in the 70s as were Pro Staffs.

For me the 70's started with Haig Ultra irons and woods. As I was graduating high school in 1972 I had moved up to my first MacGregors, MT Tourney irons and woods.

 

I ended the 70's with Ping irons and my MT Tourney woods. As I recall the Ping Anser and BullsEye 8802 flange were the putters of the decade for me.

 

Carried all of that around in a few carry bags, vinyl, single strap with no legs.

 

Oh, how could I forget the knit headcovers.

 

At the begining I was a 16 year old high school kid and finsihed the 70's as 26 year old married guy with 3 kids, a house, and a full time job.

Citation Powerbuilt was my dream set. My Grandpa had a set and now I have them. Man are they hard to hit!

Back in the mid 70's we wore Levi's and Munsingwear golf shirts for school matches. I still have my old bullseye.
