Hey all,

My putting is pretty solid. As with all things, it could be better. My golfer instructor showed me a new putting grip today called left hand low. Basically you flip flop your hands. So if your righty then your right hand would be above the left hand (as you were hitting it lefty). After making fun of this grip, he made me take 15 balls from 6 ft...then another 15 from about 15 ft.

All i have to say i was 13/15 @ 6ft...and about 10/15 from 15ft...pretty good results.

It feels akward but I am definitely going to give it a try. I googled for a bit and found out a good amount of people use it.

Just want to get opinions on the matter...Someone who uses it, do you use it just for the short - medium range putts? I saw online that some people use it but go back to conventional for long range putts. Others use it for all putts.

Any wisdom, thoughts, opinions?

I tried it several years ago. I found that I didn't miss as many putts but I didn't make as many either. I know thats kind of a double negative or something to that extent but thats the way it was. When I'm in a slump I try it for a bit just to change it up. But it never sticks.

also called cross handed, I put cross handed, I dont know why, I guess i just always have, I have tried to go to a standard grip but never got past the awkward stage so i stuck with the cross hand, if i start missing putts i will maybe stick it out and try conventional some day...

started using it at the beginning of last year after i saw vijay singh using it. my putting has improved dramatically since i started using it, but that may also be because my grip before that was a mess. but the left hand low feels the best out of all the rest i have tried. only negative is that i find i have some difficulty generating enough power on really long putts

I have messed around with it in the past, I really liked how square it kept the clubface for me, especially inside 15 feet, super square/super confident. However, I never really felt like I had a clue how far the ball was going to roll on longer putts.

IMO, stay away from it unless you have nerve problems.

 

Nobody wants to putt cross handed. It's a search for a cure, the vast majority of the time. Jim Furyk is a high profile exception but I'm not convinced he wouldn't have been a better putter conventional.

 

As someone who has bet on the weekly golf matchups for more than 20 years, a great system for my friends and I has been to identify the guys who have suddenly switched to cross handed and bet against them. Very often they'll abandon it and switch back, or find something else like the claw.

 

I always thought Freddie Couples screwed up by going to cross handed not long after he won the Masters. He was a great feeder on putts, then changed to a shover. He's had many styles subsequently but none were as natural or effective as before he tinkered in the first place, particularly on short putts.

left hand low is technically a more sound way to putt...padraig advocates that everyone new to the game should learn to put this way!

I`ve been using left hand low for about 7 yrs, If you tend to leave your putter face open or closed with the right low grip the left low really helps. Another advantage is that it helps if you`re interested in a "pulling stroke" rather than a pushing stroke.

 

I`ve found left low is superior because it`s easier to keep the blade more square.

 

With the right low style your right shoulder is lower, left low your shoulders are level, level shoulders make it easier to make a straight back stroke, for the straight back, straight through putting stroke. imo

I am def going to try it. The results I have had so far are pretty impressive. Though they all have been within 15 ft. You guys have any problems with long putts? I can see where long putts might be a problem.

long putts are the only weakness i have with the left hand low. i find i have to give it more oomph to get the ball to the hole and that makes my swing less fluid and harder to control distance

well after 3 rounds....2 round with greens that have been just aerated and 1 round in the rain where everything was wet.

 

Pretty much what mattro said...i don't make any more putts, but i don't miss any more putts. Will probably stick with it for a few more rounds and go from there.

I started putting left hand low when I first learned how to play golf, I sucked at conventional and heard david pels say try lefty low, never went back...on a side note, I played college golf with a guy who hit all shots left hand low...it was something to see...

Frankly, I've been a pretty lousy putter most of my life so I switched to LH low about 20 years ago or so (when I must have been about the world's worst putter). Conventional feels so strange now that I could never go back. I like LH low for a lot of reasons. The only downside that I just recently discovered (thanks to videotaping my putting stroke - something I recommend everyone do!) is that I have a natural tendency to forward press with the LH low (to get a flat left wrist), delofting the putter and getting some squirrly results off the face. I've been working on getting the cup back into my left wrist the last 2 days at address and at least indoors, my putting is much more solid. The "feel" is kind of like Zack Johnson looks at address. Just be aware of that tendency to deloft with LH low.

I have been putting left hand low for about 15 years and will never go back to the other way. I had more success using a mallet style putter when putting left hand low.
