There's a very old looking sign hanging in the equipment barn at my home course.............I'm told it used to hang at the end of the driveway into the place...........It reads 9 Holes-35 cents 18-holes 50 cents..............I 'm told it was out there in the mid to late 1950's..................

Courses cost more to maintain now, that's why they are so expensive.

It cost 2 shillings and sixpence for the day. We asked the Starter if we could play off the Championship tees, he said 'You can play off whatever tees you like lads', so we did. 54 holes.

6 years ago I played again with a set of hickories and it cost £90. BTW 2shillings and sixpence is 1/8 of a pound in old money at a time when there were 4 dollars to the Pound. So, 2 shillings and sixpence then was worth 50 cents!!!!

This is OT, but I just looked back at the topic post...this topic was started before I even started playing, LOL. This was started in April of 2009, I started in May of 2009.

This is a really cool thread though. The price of golf today is all I've ever known.

I guess the price of golf today will always be relevant to whatever the cost of living is on that day. We played all day for $2 dollars, and I think the minimum wages were sub $1 dollar an hour. Hamburger was 4 pounds for $1.00 :lol: Gasoline was $ .199 :wave:

I paid a few bucks and my clubs were butter knives. Of course back then that's all they made. :-)

Bella and friends used to play the Livonia, Mi city courses between 1970 & 1972
for $8 all you could play junior rates (under 17). None of us could drive (or had a car)
so somebody's mother would drop us off at the course at 8:00 A.M., and pick us up
at 8:00 at night.

Most of the time we could get 54 holes in (walking). Nobody had any money, so many
times we were under the gun to find more golf balls to finish the round(s) - same for
golf tees. Thank goodness for the tight, tree lined, Par 5 number 10 hole - it was a ball
bonanza for a kid - sometimes a MacGregor Tourney ball!

Alas - all this changed when we turned 17 in 1973 - we had to pay the "real" rate per round.
I think it was $13 for 18 holes & a cart - $ 9 or $10 if you walked.
