Question About Lies

Hellsing

Recommended Posts

got a chance to hit two Vokey wedges today and really came away impressed....one was a tour chrome 54* the other a spin milled 58*....i'm 6'01" and have always been fitted for 1/2" long 2* upright....ballflight is right to left and usually hit a little inside of center....these were 1/2" long but 2* flat....everything was right in the middle....

my question is about the lie....if standard length for these wedges is 35.25" and 35.00" respectively with a 64* lie, at 1/2" longer and 2* flat what is the lie now (or approximately)....

LOL, this sounds like one of those questions you'd see on the GRE or MCAT . . . :drinks:

The general formula is that for each 1/2" of length you make the club 1* more upright. So you're 1* flat from standard.

While lie has quite a bit of influence over direction (especially in high lofted clubs) it doesn't effect club face contact that much. That's influenced by your swing and the club's length. Get a llie board and some impact tape, stick it on the sole and see where you're striking the club and adjust from there (too much on the toe needs to be bent upright, too much on the heel needs to be bent flat).

Usually a flatter angle will go right...

Yeah, if you bend them flat, it will decrease the right to left action. However, you don't exactly want the toe of the club digging into the ground first. Ideally you want to make contact dead center on the sole of the club.

Have you been through a dynamic fitting yet? If you do bend your clubs flat, I'd definately get a lie board and impact tape to make sure you're not too much towards the toe.

If you're hitting the center and you're still not satisfied with your ball flight, it's time for a lesson.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm qualified to answer this question.

If you ask me, I think an overly right to left ball flight is predominantly a swing issue and should be treated as such. I think you should be fitted dynamically when you're swinging well and happy with things and stick with that. If you change swings or start to notice inconsistent contact or divots (even though you're swinging well) then it's time to get fit again. You should be striking the ball in the center of the clubface and should be making contact with the ground in the center of the sole. If not clubs should be bent flat or upgright so this is achieved.

You can make your clubs flatter and you will hit the ball striaghter, but will it be good for contact? Tough to say. I think it's more of a bandaid than a fix IMHO. I'd say take a lesson, it'll help you in the long run.

You are right on. My first set of clubs I was fitted with they gave me a 2 degree flat. The second set they fit me to a 1 degree flat. I bought some new x-tour this time and they fit me standard and I was hitting everything left. I just knew that I did not get a correct fitting so I found a lie board and some tape and I was dead on the center. So like normally it is the Indian and not the arrow that is the problem.
