Played 8-5-09

Played there Wednesday and was impressed by the course - especially the conditions. Very firm turf that was green and healthy. Still has some of the teeth that the old Galveston Muni had, but very playable for the most part. Lots of water like the old layout and a few akward tee shots, but a very enjoyable track. I'd probably think differently if the wind was blowing harder (we had 10-15 mph most of the day).

I haven't played this course since before Ike and remodeling. Is it a public course still or is it connected with the Hotel? Are rates affordable?

Yes, still public and very affordable considering the quality. Its even more "affordable" when your brother is in the PGA program.... I want to say the weekend rates for non-Galveston residents is around $60. Honestly, the conditions were so good, if it were in Houston, they could charge the same as Blackhorse, Meadowbrook, etc. (approaching $100).

I played this course today with a friend. Overall, the experience was great.

On the plus side:
1. Very firm turf, that is well manicured. I don't know what kind of grass it is, but it was very bouncy
2. Wide open fairways beg you to beat on the driver
3. $28 weekend twilight starts at noon!

On the negative side:
1. Very windy--probably 15-20 steady and I bet it gets worse. No tree cover, so it's just you and the elements
2. No course map/pictures on the score card, or the tee boxes. Unbelievable oversight here, but I guess they want you to pony up for a yardage book. We didn't have one, and were hitting blind tee shots most of the day guessing which way the fairway curved, and what trouble may or may not have been ahead. This cost me quite a few strokes, hitting shots into places I should have avoided.
3. Lastly, and most importantly--[b]Mosquitoes [/b] I've lived here in Houston for many years, but I have NEVER seen anything this bad. Swarms of them would pile on you anytime you ventured near the rough. I don't know how many dozens of bites I got, but it was bad enough to pretty much ruin the end of the round.

If they cleared up the mosquito problem, this would be a real gem. What do you guys think? Played it?
