Would you rather be straight or long?

Recommended Posts

This is a very good question, it is nice to hit the ball in the fairway everytime. It is very nice to be in the fairway but if you have 4, 5, and 6 irons into greens you better have a good short game because it will be very difficult to hit greens. Going 300-320 (for example) off the tee you are going to have alot more sand wedges and pitching wedges (scoring clubs) into greens. As we all know its alot easier to hit the green with a sand wedge than a 6 iron.

Like Chris DiMarco said in during the 2001 Masters when he played with Tiger in the third round I believe. He said something like Its amazing how far he (Tiger) hits it, he (Tiger) had SW into greens when I was hitting a 7 iron. Thats not an exact quote but you get the idea, even tour players who hit the ball straight want to hit the ball as far as say Tiger or Phil or JD.

The has changed. I went from a power hitter in High School and College, to a position player from ages 22-26, and now I'm trying to get back to the power game. This question needs to be worded differently IMO. If your going to hit it 250 in every fairway vs 320 in the trees on EVERY HOLE? Of course you'd take the fairway. But a better question is, would you sacrifice 15-25% of your fairways hit for another 30 yards? I would think absolutley. Power hitters don't miss EVERY fairway, but the one's they do are much easier to negotiate simply because they are closer to the hole (barring water, OB, etc. and even straight hitters have those misses occasionally). And when a power hitter does hit a fairway, it's an advantage that is very difficult to overcome for the guy back 30 yards behined. My game this year coming out of the winter isn't near as sharp as it can be mid-summer, but my scores are right where I picked up when the snow started flying last fall. I'm hitting 2 or 3 less fairways per round (avg 6-8 per round now), but have added 20-30 yards through fitness and equipment. The game this year is so much easier.

Straight. I'll gladly take 260-270 down the middle than my bro-in-law. 310 but 20 yards in the jungle. Straight all day long.

LONG!! The reason I say that is because I'm thinkin, if you are guaranteed to be in the fairway every time, that takes half the fun out of golf. I think it is fun trying to work to make yourself better, to make yourself hit it straighter. And it's much easier to try to hit it straighter if you're hitting it 300 yds than if you try to hit it farther if you hitting it 260 yds.

Today's game is a game of who can hit it the farthest, find their ball and get it into the cup the quickest. I'll take LONG.

Great post. I play with a couple of real long hitters in my normal group. I hit the ball around 275-285 depending on conditions and roll and they bomb it out there around 310 or longer. I have usually 2 more clubs into every green then they do but I hit way more greens then they average. I gave up on trying to get any longer and try to play a more controlled game. That is hit the ball consistent distances between each club.

I can play long courses (over 7000 yards) or short courses and my score varies very little. Like they say drive for show, putt for dough. Iron game is way more important, imo, then driving and that is where I excell in.
