HX TOUR vs. 56

becoming more similar
The 56 is not much different than the normal HX tour. The 56 is porbably just a little softer. Last year, the 56 had something over the tour, the sub-hex dimples. They were six small dimples on the ball (like the Hogan tour deep). This year, the sub hex is on both Callaway tour balls. How much of a difference is there between the 56 and the normal HX tour now?

I have been a Titleist fan my whole life but I decided to give the Callaway HX Tour 56 Improved vs the Callaway HX Tour Improved. The 56 seemed a bit softer and the spin was better on chips and pitches near the green. Outside of 50 yards I did not notice any differences in the spin but the 56 feels softer which I like.

I played 18 holes with the HX 56 Tour, the HX Tour and the Titleist Pro V1x. Distance was very similiar on slightly off center hits but the 56 and Tour seemed to be longer on very solid contact shots. Out of 14 driver holes, I hit my FT-3 on the screws on 11 and the Callaway ball out drove the Titleist ball on everyone. The distance gained was around 5-8 yards. Now whether I can take this ball into tournament play is another story but I am going to try and play it for the next few weeks and see if it will beat out the 1x.

If you were playing the X, you must spin the ball a lot. Do you notice that with the HX balls they are spinning out of control?

I personally do not spin the ball a lot, but with teh HX ball I can hit even a mid iron and have them finish with a yard...front or back...of my pitch mark. I find it give me a huge advantage going after par 5s or long par 3s with a 4-5 iron.

I think the biggest difference between the Callaway balls is the extra greenside "feel" that the softer cover of the HX Tour 56 offers. In my own testing, I would say that the HX Tour ball is about 8-12 yards longer than the HX Tour 56 off of a center hit driver. And the HX Tour ball is about 5-7 yards longer on iron shots. I prefer the HX Tour ball because I find it to be more predictable into and on the green. For my game the HX Tour has the perfect amount of softness and spin.

I've used both models over the last couple of weeks and have found that the HX Tour is better for my game. I spin it plenty on all shots including greenside, and it is much more durable than the HX Tour 56. The cover on the 56 is so thin that a full sandwedge shot will shred it, especially with y-cutter grooves.

IMO the HX Tour is the best ball on the market right now in terms of distance, feel and spin. I've historically played the Pro v1x, but I'm a Cally guy now. It's the only Cally product I own.

Playing the Improved 56 now I can honestly say it is the most durable and consistant ball I have ever played. The HX Tour just feels a little to solid for me being a feel player. I feel the Improved 56 is also longer than the original but still has the great soft feel I am looking for in a ball.

But the main reason why I use this ball is CONSISTANCY!!

I played the ProV1 and even tried the ProV1X for years but didn't like the harder feel of the ProV1X and also got tierd of the inconsistant spin of the ProV1. Especialy on wedge shots the ProV1 would one time spin off the world and then next time hit and check like I want it to.

The 56 is the most consistant spinning ball I have ever played. With the wedges it hits, hops and then checks back vertually where it hit everytime even with a full stock sandwedge. Now I can hit a low spinner and draw it back but when I hit a stock shot I want to to come back to where I hit it not juice it back 20ft. On the long irons this ball really grabs as well and I am amazed at how much spin you get on it even with long irons yet not over reacting with the short irons.

I played Titleist for over 15 years but at this point and time the Calloway ball will ramain #1 in my bag.

I agree with utopiapga........for me it comes down to consistancy! The Pro V1 (regular or X) would sometimes check like I want it to and sometimes spin 30+ feet off of the front of the green!!!!!!

With the HX56, I do not have the problem any more. I can be aggressive with wedge shots and not have to worry about excess spin....Just hop and spin back a couple of feet.

I have always been a Titleist man.....but go for the HX Tour 56!!!

I agree. The HX 56 is very consistent in both feel and spin. I have the same problem with the Titleist Pro V1x and Pro V1. I like the soft feel of the Pro V1 but the spin characteristics would be so inconsistent especially into a strong wind. I would hit a 50* gap wedge and spin the ball back 30 ft. or so and then the next time it would hop and stop or spin back 5 or so feet. That is when I changed to the Pro V1x. The 1x is a good into the wind ball with minimum spin but I can carry the HX 56 longer then the 1x and it rolls out about the same. I would rather carry the ball further with less roll then have a ball roll out into the rough. Time will tell if the improved Callaway HX Tour 56 will stay into play for me. I hope it does because I can get the balls about $10 cheaper then the Pro V1x.

I've just come back from playing my first round with the HX 56 on a VERY windy day. This is an unbelievable wind ball - it hardly deviated at all. This caused me a few problems as I was allowing for the wind to move the ball on certain holes and it just ploughed on through... Seemed plenty long enough but given the conditions I couldn't honestly say it was a valid test for anything other than its performance in the wind. On this showing, way better than the V1.
