Tried the 905R........

Need to spin it less. Any suggestions?
I have tried a Titleist 905 R. It is 8.5* with a Diamana 83 S-flex. My previous driver was a 905S, 8.5* with a Speeder 757 S-flex.

I hit the 905 S driver a minimum of 10 to 12 (even 15) yards farther than the 905 R.

Both launch it high, but the R launches it Higher!

Is there anything out there in a shaft, head, loft combo that would work? I love the new 905 R, but I can't give up that much yardage for straight-er!

Should I go 7.5*?

Should I change shafts? If so.... to what? The Diamana was supposed to bring the flight down, but not with this head for me!

(Just looking for ideas.)

Thanks!

PS-
Clubhead Speed is about 110 mph.
My launch angle is around 13*.
The spin is near 2700 to 2900 rpms!

Try the low spin Grafalloy Comp NT, available in either 65 gram or 85gram versions depending on your preference. Low spin, lowish launch. Just be aware that it plays around 3/4 of a flex stiffer than most. Maybe try the regular.

Echo a previous post on this thread - the 905S is a great low spin driver that gives really good distance of the tee. The 905R is marketed by Titleist as the higher spin model (even more than the T), so you get what they say you are going to get - here in the UK the 905T has been dropped out of the range altogether. My advice would be stick with the S and concentrate on getting straighter with it. If this doesn't work I've always found the Grafalloy Blue in S flex keeps the ball down, but at 65g it is considerably lighter than what you are using at present. Maybe the previous post suggestion of the Comp NT in the heavier 85g version might be the answer but I can't really comment on this shaft as I haven't even seen across here, far less used it. If it indeed has similar 'family characteristics' to the Blue, then it might well deliver the flight you are looking for.

I was also an S user, 10.5° Rombax 7V05 Stiff. I switched to the R, went down 1° to the 9.5° and went to a stiffer shaft with a little softer tip. I really like it, and my LM numbers are better with the R. I would like to see you try the R in 7.5. That being said, I spent a day on the launch monitor with 25 other club pros and the S was a better fit for two of them. Both had high ball speed, 170+ and high spin, 3500+. The R was a better fit for the rest of us. As I said, try the R in 7.5°, but the S might remain the better fit for you, the S is still a great driver too.

I was using the S in a 8.5 w/Graf Blue Stiff and really liked it. With all the buzz about the R I had to try it. I got my hands on one with a 9.5 w/V2 stiff and expected to hit it too high based on the deeper head and higher loft. I was extremely surprised when I hit it about the same hieght as the S, but the biggest thing was how straight it was. My usual draw was quite a bit softer, and didn't turn into a screaming hook into all the wind I normally play in down here (20-25 mph w/gust to 30 Sat, Sun, and yesterday!!). I am giving up about 10-15 yards, but I'm hitting twice as many fairways after putting it in the bag. The three rounds I've played since buying it I've hit 12, 11, and 13 fairways respectfully where I used to hit maybe 6 or 7. The into the wind tee shots were eating me up.

I haven't had my swing speed checked in the past two years, but based on what it was then I swing right there with you, so the V2 may be worth a try.

Just my $.02

The numbers given were the ones from last year off of the 905S.

I really like the new 905 R for sound and straightness. I realize that the 905 S might be the best over all, but I find it hard to believe that Davis Love III is one of the highest spinners on the PGA TOUR and he is in a 905 R with that V2 shaft!!! (A surprise!)

I have thought of the 7.5* and might have to give that a whirl! I do hit a high ball. What I'm looking for is some roll after my tee ball hits the ground, instead of just falling to earth and sitting there! Right now, my ball marks in the fairway are about 2 to 3 feet away from where my ball is coming to rest! (Not good!)

I would agree that the R is easier to hit. The S is a great driver, but if you heel it or toe it just a bit you can lose it pretty good. Your numbers with the S look pretty good. The spin is not ideal but OK none the less. Did you have any numbers taken with the R? That would help. Your launch could still come up a few degrees, so the 8.5* loft shouldn't be out of the question. I think a great deal of your trouble is swing related. I just fit a kid the HAD to have a 7.5 because he hit it so high, but if he would have gotten rid of his in to out hang back flip move, he wouldn't hit it so high. I don't know if that is the case with you or not. Let's just say I don't meet too many guys that need a 7.5 degree loft with a 165 ball speed (110 swing speed, which means nothing by the way). Anyway, try a heavier shaft, possibly a NV105, V2 85 or 95. These are all tip stiff shafts, that will allow you to keep your launch under control and reduce your spin a great deal. Remember, the heavier you go the less spin you will have. The 8.5 will almost always be a better option, because it's easier to square the face. Let me know if I can help.

Good Luck.
