Black Oxide Kit by Caswell

I was searching the web about DIY black oxide and ran across Caswell's Black Oxide Kit. They advertise that the process can be done at room temperature, no electricity needed, etc. Sounds like an easy DIY. I was just curious if anyone had used the kit and wjat their experience had been. Been thinking about doing this myself, just haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Good luck if you decide to do this! It does make it seem pretty easy to do.

I purchased one of those kits a few years back. I was applying the BO finish to some of my custom hand grinds. While it definitely works, and is very easy to use, it does rub off much faster than when I take it to the finish shop. BO service is really fairly inexpensive to have performed, so I'd recommend taking/sending it to the shop. Just my two cents...

It's a cold oxide and it does not last long at all. I was going to cold black ox my irons with the kit, but it doesn't last long at all. If you want something that lasts, find someone to do a hot black ox treatment.

Great advice. I didn't realize the cold treatment was not as resilient as the hot one. So I guess I'm going to go the professional route.

No one is questioning it works, just doesn't last that long. Even though it cold app, I still warm the head really well with a heat gun and sue several applications. Again good prep is the key to good results, sand baby smooth and clean spotless with alcohol before black ox.
