Old MacGregors and some Pennas

Recommended Posts

I ran across this forum same time ago and was frankly surprised that there was still interest in the old persimmon drivers. I've had a collection in the basement for years and figured it was just a set of memories from an era that has gone by. Seeing how some people really like to look at these, I figured I'd share.

First up is an original set of M43's. They are basically mint for being over 60 years old. The still have the original finish, shafts, and leather grips:

Next is a set of M85's. I reshafted and refinished the 3 and 4 wood and used them a number of years. The driver has never been touched. The finish is worn, but the grip and shafts are the originals.

Then there are all the drivers I used way back when. The Tommy Armour 945W is one I used a lot. When I lived in Houston in the mid 80's it was refinished by the Wood Brothers at their little shop they had in Humble. The blond headed club is a M43 that I just loved in high school, but I could never hit it. The Tommy Armour 403T is an old one that was in the process of being refinished, but I never got around to finishing it. So it has just be sitting in the basement for years hoping someone will pick it up and bring it back to life. The last one is a 60's version of the eye-o-matic, but the face was so torn up when I got it, it was not repairable. Again the Wood Brothers worked on it and simply installed a new red fiber face.

Just for fun I figured I show off some original Toney Penna's. I bought these in the late 70's, they were the last of the truly nice persimmon clubs made.

Lastly, when my dad passed away I was given these very old MacGregor clubs. They appear to be some of the first MacGregors with a steel shaft. They are not in really great shape, but you can still all original markings.

That is kind of the collection. I have some more, but did not dig them out to take pictures.

Is this stuff worth something to anyone these days?

Still a lot of us who love to spend money on those persimmon beauties. You sure have some nice ones! That M43 set is sweet as well as those M85. Classics never get old. Very interesting to hear how you had WB refinish that 945W, I know thats how they got started in the business before making their own woods.

Those are some terrific woods!

There is something about classic persimmon woods that brings out the passion in all of us who had the opportunity to use them. With respects, the sound and feel of modern metal woods will never come close to the sound and feel of persimmon striking a balata ball perfectly. The feel that was produced resonated through the body like no other.

Thanks for sharing!

You have some "well taken care of" persimmon woods that are really sharp to look at and play. In my humble opinion, your father had very good taste in Persimmon woods. Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.

Your persimmon woods are worth "alot". Their your fathers too so you want to make your father proud by educating yourself about the clubs and their monetary value. In my humble opinion, you should get them apraised by "at least" a couple of informed and experienced apraisers. I can't help you there but maybe contact the USGA and inquire from there. Do your father proud!
