Volvokiller's WITB and shortish intro....

New member - Now with swing vid
Hello all,

New to the site and figured I'd give a short bio as well as some equipment info. I just turned 31 and have been playing golf since I was 10. I work in the golf industry as a non-PGA assistant professional in Maryland. I left the golf business in 2004 tried to make some money and hated working in an office, emailing and talking on the phone all day long. I returned to golf in early 2009 and am happy to be back doing something I enjoy. I am a pretty decent player but haven't kept an official handicap since my junior days. My low round last year was 66, and I'd say I manage to break par once out of every 5 rounds or so. Anyway, on to the sticks!

I've always been somewhat of an equipment geek but only in the sense that I pay attention to things most don't. I could probably recreate the bags of the 20 guys I play with most often and a good number of the 200 or so bags at my facility. I'm a science guy so the specs and techy stuff is neat to me. Here is what I'm playing now:

golf002.jpg

Driver is a PING Rv2 10.5. Shaft is from a company called Nventix. I got turned onto it at the PGA demo day this year and have only played a few rounds with it. So far, so good!

golf005.jpg

3 Wood (14) and Hybrid (17) are the new PING I15 series. Shaft is the standard TFC700 in x flex. PING did a great job with this shaft. I prefer the weight, feel and performance compared with the optional UST Avixcore.

golf009.jpg
golf010.jpg

4-PW Mizuno MP-30. Shaft is Flighted Rifle 6.5. Was professionally fit for these in 2003 and are by far the best clubs I've ever had. Going to take something special to get these out of the bag.

golf013.jpg

52, 56, 60 PING Tour-W black nickel. Shaft is DG S300. I've always played a softer shaft in my wedges and prefer the spin characteristics of the DG over the Rifles. These are 2009 heads and spin like nobodys business!

golf014.jpg

Ah yes, the putters. Putting has never been my forte. A self-proclaimed head case, I am constantly changing putters. These are the ones I took out of my trunk. I have about a dozen more in the attic. From left to right: Scotty Cameron Newport TE, Rife 460 Tour Blade, Taylor Rossa Siena 4 agsi, YES! Tracy II, PING Anser 2, PING I don't remember, Taylor Rossa Meza Monza, and a 43" Hog 1003B.

golf018.jpg

I look forward to sharing the knowledge I have as well as absorbing some new stuff. I've never spent time on a golf forum before, so this is new to me!

what are the specs on the nunchuck
From my post in the PGA demo day thread....

Posted 28 March 2010 - 10:05 AM

I'm playing the Nunchuk in my driver right now. Ping Rv2 10.5. I've played 4 rounds since swapping from a Diamana Blueboard 63s. The Nunchuk is far more stable and firm feeling. I'm experiencing less shot dispersion on heel and toe hits. Ball flight on well struck shots is great.

I was introduced to the shaft at the aforementioned PGA Demo Day. Here's what I remember from the tent staff:

1. The shaft is heavy. 109 gram total weight.
2. Manufactured by UST Mamiya, so it is a quality piece.
3. Super butt and tip stiff.
4. Designed to control shaft lag and stabilize the head.
5. Eliminates need to manipulate the club face at impact.

So far I agree with all of these sentiments. The shaft does feel heavy but not overly so. It plays lighter than that. I previously played a Blueboard 85 gram and find it to be similar in feel (the BB 63s was an experiment gone wrong for me).

Some interesting things about the shaft are that there are no flex options, and no different models. Meaning, you butt trim the shaft to the desired length whether is it for a driver, fairway wood, or even hybrid. They are marketing the shaft for all players from juniors to women to men. I'm a little skeptical as to how a weaker player would fare with it but they must have some numbers to back it up. My driver speed is in the 105 range, 260 carry.

Thanks for the comments and welcomes!

Only about 20 rounds on the I15s. Must be the camera flash. I need to practice my club pic taking skills.

As for the Rife vs YES!, I just picked the Rife up. The roll grooves are quite pronounced and the feel isn't quite as soft as the YES! I'll know more once I get it on the golf course. Stupid weather.

I see you like the MP-30s. I often wonder about giving them a try. I came across a demo 6 iron and love to hit it on the range. I currently play ping I3+ and love them as well. They look bigger behind the ball and that give me some confidence. The interesting thing is that when I put a bad swing on either the Ping or MP-30, the results aren't that much different.

If you're a par shooter (with a self-labled shakey putter) you must be a great ball-striker. What's your taking on the forgiveness of the 30s, do you even think about that?

Welcome to the site and cool set-up.

The MP-30s are the best irons I've ever had. My first real set of clubs were second hand DCIs, and I've played blades from Titleist, KZG, and Mizuno. Moved from MP-29s to the MP-30s about 7 years ago. I don't hit them as far as most new clubs due to the very traditional lofts but they look and feel great. I'm not a range rat so I am not real hard on forged clubs. As for forgiveness, I don't have much to compare to. Bad swings produce bad shots. They are probably not as forgiving as true cavity backs. I think I'm a pretty good ball striker. When I'm playing twice a week, I usually hit between 12-14 greens per round.

As for the Rife vs YES! putter, I played 11 holes with the Rife yesterday. Ugh. Didn't like the feel nearly as much. Ball seems to roll ok but couldn't start the ball online. The Rife is heavier than most of my putters so that could be the problem.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
