What is a "Boardy" Shaft?

Hey all!

So I've been an avid golfer for some time now, but I'm finally (thanks largely to this great site) learning about the merits of better shafts. However, when reading reviews, I've come across the term "boardy" on more than one occasion. For example, I personally like the feel of the AXIVCore green shafts (and I'm planning on throwing one in my G15 driver and one in my G15 3W), but I've heard that some find it "boardy". Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but can someone please explain this to me?

For me a boardy shaft is something that is too tip stiff or too low a torque. I'll have trouble generating enough head speed to make it perform and even a solid contact will result in a shot that has no feel to it. It goes okay but has no zip to it.

Fair enough....so basically "dull" in terms of both feel and performance?

The term is more of a feel thing. Usually refers to a shaft that is too stiff and not flexing right for your swing. I don't know your swing speed but if you're an average swinger try hitting a few x flex shafts at a golf store, you'll probably understand better after you feel the difference.

Boardy shafts are usually described by people that can sometimes get away with an untipped X but should play a properly tipped stiff.

There is also the group that thinks that soft shafts are "smooth."

In general, there are fast action shafts and slow action shafts. The slow action shafts are the "smooth" shafts that everyone loves except power hitters because they spin too much.

A shaft will feel boardier the stiffer it gets. There is a trade off between tip stiffness, torque, and accuracy. The Aldila ProtoPYPE is a classic example of a boardy shaft, but it is one of the straightest and longest shafts out there if you can load it. Unfortunately, that means the player need to ensure they choose the proper flex so they CAN load the shaft.

I personally define "boardy" as a shaft that doesn't feel smooth because of the bend profile or the way the shaft is constructed, and it isn't a function of the flex. When I think of boardy I think of a shaft that doesn't load or kick smoothly, even in the correct flex. Of course, a shaft that is overly stiff will feel boardy, but I don't restrict boardy to flex alone.

Two types of shafts: boardy & bendy/loady.

Bendy/loady(need a better term?) shafts give you the feel that you are bending/loading the shaft, clubhead trails hands a bit coming down.

Boardy shafts are rigid feeling, feel like they stay straight, clubhead is always right there with your hands.
