Best/longest/controllable 15* 3 Wood off the tee

Hi All,

 

Any suggestions here would be great. I use a 4+ 42.5" 15* Callaway Steel Head III as my 3 wood. 99% of the time I use it off the tee but it is very easy to hit off the deck. I have the ability to turn it over to the left as I need to do on several tee shots at my course. Though, it goes a bit too far left (mostly my fault, correct?). It has the Callaway stock System III Firm Flex shaft in it (probably a little to do with my going hard left issue as well, I think). Though, I can control the ball flight nicely. I play off an 8 HC and swing speed is 100 MPH. I am thinking of a larger faced, SQUARE, 43 inch, 15*, 3 wood. Maybe the Callaway 3X Tour 15* with the Fuji Platform 26.3 S shaft. I have no problem with a high ball flight so I assume this will set up will help keep things in check. I have hit the R7 TP and did like all that much - just didn't have the control that I had with my Steel Head III. What do you think? Any suggestions? Oh, by the way, I do have a lesson this aft to work on my hard left stuff that has been going on lately. Your input is appreciated as I am planning to knock a few different sticks soon

Callaway GBB2 Titanium and/or Fusion...they're nearly equal and an are they long. I've never hit anything like them.

Thank you! What shaft did you use with the Fusion 3 wood. I am bit nervous as the head is a bit light. But, I have heard they fly long off the tee. Thanks!

Tour Edge Exotics 15º is the best fairway wood I've hit......and I've hit a lot. Square clubface, good size head that allows you to hit it off the tee and the turf.

 

As far as the shaft, I have an Accra SC65 M4 (stiff) that works really well. Very low torque but not a "boardy" feel.

 

Give it a try and it may work for you too.

I echo the same positive comments about the TE Exotics 15 degree 3 wood. I have one with an Accra T60 shaft in M4 (stiff) flex, and this combo has been absolutely lights out for me. It's so easy to hit straight and long off the tee and the deck, and feel is phenominal. I use this club on some of the tight courses in the area and find myself only 15 to 20 yards less than where my driver would take me. If price isn't an issue, I'd give this club serious consideration. Best of luck!!!

I would recommend the old trusty v-steel...its the most versatile fairway metal I've ever hit. Controllable, workable, any lie or tee, and long. I play a 13* v-steel and I can still hit it off of anything.

I've used just regular ol' Vista Pros for awhile now in all my fairways with real good results. I also had good results with UST products in fairways.

Another vote for the Tour Edge Exotics. My swing speed is in the low 90's so I play the stock graphite shaft and it is truly lights out. So easy to hit off the deck and from the tee it is within 20 yards of my driver. I hit a V Steel before the TE Exotics and swore I would never change.... well I did.

If you want control and forgiveness, I would look at either of these:

 

Nike T-60

Nike Sasquatch

Tour Edge Exotics

 

Also, just feels great....and I own it until I can find a tour edge used: 904f

I just got a Ping G5 15º and had it shafted with a UST V2 75. Wow. Definitely long. Easy to hit off the deck and tee as well. The V2 75 makes an excellent fw wood shaft. Launches nice and high, but isn't loose at all.

If I were looking at one for mostly off the tee, the G5 is hard to beat. Very long with tons of forgiveness. I had it with a UST shaft and it was a weapon

Check out Sonartec SS3.5. I keep on trying different OEM's fairway woods but keep on coming back to Sonartecs. I have SS-05 13* and SS-1.5 14.5*

The Sonartec's are a (big) step above all other brands I have tried & I've tried most retail and many tour & import options.

 

IMHO...the SS-3.5 is the pinnacle of all the Sonartec heads - it simply does everything perfect. Other Sonartec's I've owned: the SS-02, three separate SS-03's, NP-99, RC BBD Type H, & a few other RC's I can't remember the model name of.

 

I continue to try other fairway woods on the market, but nothing holds a candle to this brand or model.

I think i will be the first to say that the v-steel is a bunch of garbage. I've tried every degree known and i can't get myself to like it. I actually tried my friends Original Titleist PT and it is sooooooooooo solid off the turf and tee which i found surprizing because the face is so deep. I'm considering getting one (15*)

I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I absolutely love my Nike T40 Tour three wood.

I work in a shop and have access to any clubs. I have yet to find a 3 wood to knock the Steelhead III out of the bag. I have it shafted with an NVS and it is a cannon, and is still workable.

You might want to consider a 3 wood of the same make you are using, rather than the strong 4. The 3 is the same loft but is slightly larger and more forgiving.

They can be found for a very good price on ebay and that will give you some extra $$ to fool around trying out different shafts. If the club is a bit too closed, a good clubmaker could alway shim it to make it square or even open.

I have a Nike T-40 Tour 4 wood with the Speedstep stiff steel shaft. after two years it is still in the bag. The small head makes it easy to hit off ANY lie, especially deep rough. The selling point with this club, though, is the distance it delivers. It's an absolute cannon and it's accurate.

 

I have also heard similar reviews of the T-60, so either is worth a try.
