Moving To Austin in July! Tell me where to play!

I'm moving to Austin the first week of July for about 10 months for business. I'll be living close to the Arboretum and working near the airport. Looking for a couple things.

1.Courses close to either work or apartment that are good for a quick afternoon round. Lets say $25 to $45 Twilight

2.Courses in the area for weekend rounds. Any Price!

3.Courses within a couple hours drive for weekend trips?

Also wouldn't mind finding a good course to join for a year or so while I'm there if you guys can recommend any?

I like courses that are in good shape with good greens and don't mind dropping a little coin to play the good ones while I'm there. I usually play the tips so the longer the better!!

How Do I Get On Austin CC and the Longhorn Club?

Hyatt Lost Pines is best public course close to your work (west of Bastrop on 71). Resort course that's always in good shape & a challenge.

Avery Ranch is the best public course close to your apartment....one of the best in Austin for that matter.

Weekend rounds in the area...best are Teravista, Falconhead, Star Ranch and Roy Kizer (muni course close to your work). Barton Creek if you don't mind spending $100.

Couple hours drive....

The Bandit in New Braunfels,
Horseshoe Bay Ram Rock or Applerock in Marble Falls,
Quarry, Republic or Pine Valley in San Antonio,
Vaaler Creek in Blanco
Blackhorse South in NW Houston

Great Hills is closest private course to your apartment....don't know if they have annual memberships. Onion Creek is closest private to your work. Save your $ and play all the Barton Creek and Horseshoe Bay courses instead.

Good luck getting on Austin CC or UT Club. Both are way overrated IMO. If you're up for hobnobbing....try to get on Spanish Oaks, Escondido or Austin GC. Those are more worth the effort.

Not a fan of the UT club... in a poll of Austin area courses, it would not be among the top ten. The Hills at Lakeway is a much better choice.

Contact Great Hills CC and ask about joining for the limited time you are here -- I think they have done that before. It is a good golf course that is usually in quite good shape. Because it is somewhat hidden in the Arboretum area, it isn't as well known and consequently is quite affordable.
Perhaps because of that, it has a bunch of Austin's better amateurs. I like the fact many of the guys there walk and there is a game every day among a group of 2- 10 hcps. Not fancy, but nice views....a couple of really great holes and a focus on golf

Other than that. HSBay offers deals online that are worth finding. Ram Rock is one of the harder courses in the state. Wolf Dancer at the Hyatt in Bastrop is a good course and GOLF512 offers discounts online.

go to golf512.com for tee times and "discounted rates" around central tx. circle c, teravista, shadow glen, avery ranch, and falcon head are some of my favorites. the best deal might be spicewood. $999 for a years membership unlimited. if your going to live near the Arboretum and work near the airport your going to be in traffic hell. hour to hour and half to get to work in the morning, no bulls$%t. if you dont mind being a regular joe, lions, blackhawk or forrest creek are also nice. before you leave town for good, make sure you play the hills of lakeway and barton creek at least once. if you need a rental, i used to sell real estate in austin and i still have hook ups. let me know

Great hills offers 1 yr memberships..and 3 month ones now I think. As an ex member, I highly recommend it. Great greens and more of a target golf course than bomber. I highly recommend Shadowglen in Manor (about 25 mins from Arboretum)..Toughest course in Austin in my opinion and under 30 bucks usually. Every green is tiered severely and lots of hazards/ob.I love it!

I checked into Great Hills membership options and all they are offering is Jr Membership $1200 initiation and $287 a month and $75 food per quarter. How do you get just a one year membership? Anyone a member there?

I'm a member at Great Hills and they got rid of the associate membership a few years ago. Did you mention to them that you just wanted a one-year membership? I would think they would work something out, as they are always looking for more $. I'll try and call out there tomorrow and see what I can find out. Email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

I'm a member there. I'd go with the weekday membership. Pretty good price and you can play on the weekends after 12pm for a cart fee. I'm up there quite a bit. Let me know if you join

I agree, Wolf Dancer is awesome! Also in the San Antonio area River Crossing, it's off of 46 and 281 always in good shape and 3hr and 45 min pace. Pecan Valley was in horrible shape when i played last month, but is an awesome tough course. The Quarry is cool if you want a links style course. TPC "Oaks Course" is fantastic but pricey. If you are in the area let me know, i am a member at oak hills cc in San Antonio, the guest fee is $105. Happy to have you out, the pace of play is sub 4 hours, rough at 3 inches and the greens running a 11-12.

Welcome to Austin/San Antonio!
