A Tale of Two Spiders...

I have really enjoyed my Spider EX. Except for one thing: alignment. And obviously that’s a pretty big deal.

I really do better with blades or anything that has a strong top rail. I line up better with a perpendicular feature rather than parallel. Which is unfortunate because the pure roll grooves do quite well for putting a good roll on the ball.

Im just scratching the surface of this rabbit hole. I think my next direction is looking for a blade with groove tech.

Alignment at set-up seems to be my issue, and yes, that is a pretty big deal.

For me it is more about the way the shaft and the head align that throws me off. I can never get comfortable with double bends or slant necks. It always seems off to me at address.  I find myself endlessly fidgeting and never quite trusting that I am square.

The center shaft just looks perfect at address to me, so simple and easy to align at set-up. I just set it down behind the ball and go. No bends or weird angles to deal with.

Last few rounds have been pretty good (30 and 31 putts) although the greens here are in pretty rough shape. I am gonna play next weekend at a course that has the best greens in the area so that will be a good test. It is nice getting the ball to start on my intended line for a change, now it is just down to read and speed.

My custom order got pushed back till April, but I can wait it out with the Chalk till then. I miss the soft feel of the white hot insert, but the surlyn pure roll insert is not too bad and I hear the Tour Spiders are a little softer feeling with the Hybrar Echo Damper that they put behind the face to help with the feel.

Tarratain, nice putters. Couple of questions if you don't mind.

How long from order to delivery? Do you feel the insert is softer that the spider X.

Hey ShortSticks - I placed my order November 18, with the expectation I would have them before Christmas. There was a manufacturing delay (I also believe they underestimated demand), and the '3-4 week' expectation turned out to be almost 7 weeks after prodding them...

I'm an 'Eagle Member' from their Loyalty program, and not sure if that carried any weight or not but they did end up giving me a substantive discount for the unforeseen delay.

I've also played the 'My' blade series which have the aluminum insert similar to the option given on the Spiders. I really like that insert in the blade, but have used Spiders before and like the softer 'Surlyn' insert for these mallets. All subjective really, some like the harder feel, I prefer the softer feel in the mallet...

Furthermore, I also like a heavier putter and use 11g weights for my main gamer vs. the stock 6g weights in the 34" model (34.5" specifically in my case). Keep in mind other lengths have different stock weights based on lenght (As illustrated within the attached pic).

Cheers!

  • 4 weeks later...

So, full circle some 14 years later, I find myself in the same situation with two spiders to chose from.

I have been playing the Spider X Chalk CS for the last month and it has gone well. The Spider Tour X CS is here now to give it a challenge for the top spot. They are quite similar but a little different. My hope was that the Tour X would be much softer off the face, but first impressions say it is only a little different. I will have to play them both outside and do a few A to B comparisons to get a better idea. I learned my lesson from the last go around and will not be selling these, so I may just alternate as the mood arises.

I will post a few comparison pics (cause every story is better with pics).
