Gamesmanship on public courses

Got paired with a couple of guys that were friends. Played a round with them and they seem like nice guys. Never knew them before. However, they definitely were using the gamesmanship angle on me even though we weren't playing for anything. They were critiquing my missed shots. If I hit one thin or not flush. They were saying stuff like " you nearly missed the ball or you can't hit a chip today" and other stuff like that and not joking or sarcastic. I was amused that they were trying to get in my head like we were playing a match. It was pretty funny to me. Haha.

 

You think gamesmanship like this is stupid and funny?

I love it, my friends and I are like that all the time, just don't know if I'd break it out on people I didn't know. My favorite is a duff after an awesome drive and then telling my playing partner, "I don't know if I would have laid up after a drive like that." That always gets him going.

Ya it may be fun and all if your playing with friends and I have definatley busted out some one liners on them, but I would never ever say something like that to a stranger unless they made a joke about it to me.

With your friends I can see it being fine. Personally me and my friends give it to each other all the time. "Wow, you can't find the planet with your driver today". "Your skirt keeps getting in the way". Stuff like that is common place for a round between friends. But with people that you are unaware of their volatility I wouldn't mess with. Especially after their 3rd 3 putt of the front nine.

Joking around and busting on people is all good. I enjoy it more than most with people I know.

However, these guys were telling me about my bad shots in a more serious manner. Didn't bother me cause I get bad mouthed all day but just thought it funny that people resort to petty stuff by criticizing your shots to try to get you off your game in a friendly round for no money. Haha.

Personally, I could care less if I get beat or beat someone unless it is a competition or money game.

Sometimes the best gamesmanship is when you say just before a critical tee shot something like. "You've got a great round going, so far"

Do you live in the south suburbs of Chicago? You must have had the displeasure of playing with the twins. I've seen guys pummel them at the range for dong this and they will make the unsuspecting person on a golf course wish they had stayed home.

Where I come from, guys have a way of dealing with guys like that, what we call backwoods justice where you wait for them in the parking lot.

I do it all the time when I play with friends, but I have never though about doing it to someone I got matched with at the course. I would be pretty upset if someone did it to me and I am sure others would not expect it either.
