4 to 5 days reserved for golf in 4 week trip to Southwest

What would you do?

I will spend a 4 week long vacation in the southwestern US with my wife in October 2011. She does not play golf, but it is agreed that I can spend 4 or 5 days on my own on something golf related. Most of the time will be spent in some of the National Parks in those areas (Grand Canyon, Mojave, Joshua Tree, maybe as far North as Sequoia, and some of the sites in New Mexico and Northern Arizona) and some time in the bigger cities (San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix). We will also visit Santa Fe in New Mexico.

I am quite undecided if I should spend my "golf time" on trying to play as much as possible (trouble is the overseeding season), or to visit some of the factories and custom fitting facilities (Ping, Callaway, Titleist, Fujikura) or to take lessons at some of the famous golf academies either in the Palm Springs or Phoenix areas.

If you had those five days at your disposal (and probably could not return to this corner of the Earth for another ten years), what would you do in terms of golf?

Given that you are coming from Europe, I would certainly want to PLAY golf. Desert golf is pretty unique and likely to be so much different than what you are used to.

Problem is the timeframe. October is smack in the middle of the overseed. Early in the month you will need to look for courses that haven't started, later in the month you will be faced with finding courses that started early and have the longest grow-in. I'm most familiar with the Phoenix area. Palm Springs or Vegas may be a little different.

I would definitely play golf.


If youre going to be in Santa Fe, I would definitely check out Twin Warriors or Black Mesa. I dont think they will be affected by overseed at that time, and they are both pictureseque desert terrain courses. "Golf The Sante Fe Trail"!!!

Also, if you're in northern AZ, the courses in Sedona, Flagstaff, and Prescott shouldnt be overseeding either, right?
