Self-made combo sets?

Any experience?

I know that there are sombo sets out like the 735 cm, the nike pro combos... Has anyone here tried to mix similar sets of irons. For example, my friend used 3,4,5,6 iron of MP 60 and 7,8,9,P of MP 32s. I am interested in buying blades in the near future, but I don't know about the long irons. Any thoughts.

i have 3,4,5 in 690.cb and 6,7,8,9,pw in 690.mb. i love the set, but if i got it again i would go with the all MB's, because i find the CB's topline to look a lot bigger against the MB.

i use nike slingshot long irons 3-6 and nike blade 7-pw. i put PX shafts in both and really like it. the only problem is the slingshots are hard to hit out of deep rough.

My home made combo set of RAC CBs and MBs is working out really well. I came from the natural combo set of Titleist 735s. I like the RACs better in the CBs.

I have also used TMs older combo set, those were nice too. Seems like TMs blend better than most.

Others I have tried that did not work out as well were Tourstage. The difference between MBs and CBs in the different models just do not blend well.

Its best to order them directly from the manufacturer so that the lie/loft/length progressions match throughtout. There could be big gaps in the lofts depending on the OEM

Through a local shop with a TM account, individually ordered each iron with the exact specs I wanted.

A couple of years ago I put together a set of gunmetal Cleveland TA-1's and TA-3's. I just bought the two sets seperate on eBay for cheap and used the TA-1 PW-8 and the TA-3 7-3. Worked great. Kind of regret having to sell them.

When I wanted to build a combo set, I went with components.

I used the Snake Eyes 600B and 600C, great clubs at a cheaper price than the OEM's.

I played for a while with MP-29 short irons and MP Grads for the longer irons. The MPGrad was a great forged cavity backed iron back when there weren't many available. I just used tip weights (in true Mizuno tour fashion) to get the swingweights in line, and I installed the shafts myself, worked out great.

I bought the grads for almost zip. The short irons were worn but the 6 on down to 2 iron were in great shape, with very littel wear.
