Isn't the Golf Equipment Industry Great?

I just pulled the trigger on yet another new set of Irons/Wedges today. It got me thinking on how much I have spent over the last 1.5 Years (Since I started playing) on golf equipment.

Over the last year I have owned/traded/sold

5 Drivers

4 3 Woods

4 5 Woods

2 Hybrid 2h

2 Hybrid 3h

6 Set of Irons

3 Approach/Gap Wedges

5 Sand Wedges

4 Putters

and when everything is said and done I have only lost $368.39 with all the traded/selling/exchaning/etc (not including items like Shipping, etc)

With so many great deals out there from manufactures with Trade-In programs, free club offers, etc it's really easy to just try ton's of clubs and off them if you don't like them. Unfortunately at this point, I'm done or my wife will absolutely murder me if I buy any more clubs, unless it's for her :help:

Anyone else take advange of all the deals out there?

Thanks.

you have been playing for 1.5 years and are playing a set of x-tours? I think you probably could have spent a fraction of that and could be playing better golf (equipment that has a bit more forgiveness). The most expensive set is not mean it is the best for you. Just my two cents.

Agreed, but beyond Equipment I have also invested ton's of money in lessons (1 / Week) since last July or 2005. And actually, the X-Tours are very easy clubs to hit. I played 9 holes yesterday using a Demo 6 Iron and had shot equal and/or better to the X-18's that I just got rid of along with many balls on the range. They are no where near as "unforgiving" as one would think a players club would be.

Thanks,

Do you work for/with Callaway (everything you own is from them)? They are notorious for having high priced equipment. I am glad they work for you and you have the money to spend on equipment. I guess my point was/is there are a lot of companies out there that produce quality equipment (not all are the big guys) that you could have a great set for less than 1/2 what you spent. I have been playing since I was 4 yrs old and I do not think I (or my parents when I was younger) have spent that much in my lifetime. Just for the record, I am playing a used set of I3+ blades (fit to me) that cost me $250.

No don't work for them/with the, but I play Callaway equipment b/c they have great customer service and great trade-in values for purchase of new Callaway equipment.

This post turned a strange direction quickly. My point of the entire post was that it just seems so easy to buy/sell/trade clubs and try out new stuf. And while everything is soo expensive you really can still get good deals and good discounts on equipment making the end price not as painful on the pocket.

What can I say, I love buying and trying new equipment, it's just too much fun :help:

Thanks,

I think the X-tours are fine clubs for a beginner with plenty of money and time to invest in this game. The slightly smaller head s(compared to the X-18's and Big Berthas) require more consistent ball-striking, but the reduced offset (I think) will reward/promote a "proper" release.

Still, I've been playing more than 10 times as long as you, and I've had a similar number of clubs, most of which I purchased used. You've got fine equipment now...I'm curious: what have you gotten rid of?

I guess a more relevant response to the original point....golf is funny in this manner. Many people are out to get the newest stuff, even if their current stuff is performing just fine. Technology in irons and putters have not changed that much in the past 20 years. Driver technology has changed, but the last time I checked, there isn't a place on the score card to put the details of the equipnent that was used to get the score. I feel people make changes in equipment for really no reason.

Play what works for you...if it happens to be X-Tours and you are spending the time on the range and on the course to make them work...great...

Yes the Golf industry is great...depending upon the store, you can sometimes develop good friendships with the staff and get deals that no one else can get and get great prices.

Seems like you have hit a niche and good for you...

As PT Barnum said - "There's a sucker born every minute......"

Learn to play with what you got. Back in the 60s, 70's, and 80's - club manufacturers changes club designs every 4-5 years. Sure, there were very minor changes year to year, but the overall design stayed the same. Today, they seem to change every six months!! Look at Titleist! I think they have come out with 8-10 different iron designs over the past 2 years.....or so it seems. Golf clubs have become like cars, computers, a HDTVs. "New and Improved" draws all the geeks and wanna-bes who think it's better to look good than to be good (in the case of golf clubs) back into the stores. You've ONLY LOST about $350-400, but if you were fit properly for your beginning game the first time - you would have lost $0.00!

Relax and play with what you got. Enjoy golf courses and the game....not what your bag looks like. :cheesy:

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
