Portland last weekend July

Recommended Posts

Pumpkin ridge and where else?
My wife has a big thing going on in Portland the last weekend of July and wants me to spend my day at the golf course both Sat and Sunday, possibly friday afternoon as well.
I know I want to play Ghost Creek at Pumpkin Ridge, and would love to give the Witch Hollow course a shot, but I guess it's private so I'm looking for other recommendations under $100 and not a 6 hr round on the weekend.
Any ideas?

Reserve South if it that is the course open while you are here. North is good, just not as good as South.

Langdon Farms is decent as is Chehalem Glenn and OGA course.

If you want to get 36 on the day you play pumpkin I would go play Quail Valley in the morning. Then get the twilight at pumpkin. (twilight there is $90, overrated overpriced course imo). They are about a 10-15 minute drive away from each other. I would personally rather play quail than pumpkin anyday.

Langdon Farms is also top notch. The only downside is the piece of property which is outstanding is sandwiched by a few highways so you get quite a bit of car noise on holes 1-2, 11, 16 and 17. It is always immaculate though and for ~$45 is a very good deal.

I agree with the reserve South course ( They are a 36 hole facility that rotates which course is private and which is public every week). The north course is good but not up to the south course standard for the same price and the relative pain in the butt of getting there.

If you are on the east side I am a big fan of stone creek. A tremendously good layout with very disparate front and back 9's.

OGA has a really great front nine followed by a pretty lackluster back 9 imo, and it is quite a bit south, but you could 36 hole it with langdon farms as they are reasonably close to each other.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll try the quail valley/pumpkin ridge combo, although Langdon farms looks good as well.
Wifey is occupied all day both Saturday and Sunday, but we have to drive back to Everett, Wa sunday afternoon/Evening.
Maybe I'll do the 36 on Sat, and find another course for Sunday morning if possible.
Time to google some maps......

RS,

Here's a sleeper about 40 minutes from Hillsboro. http://www.golfcedars.com/golf/proto/golfcedars/

I agree with other posters that Pumpkin Ridge is overpriced. It is a good golf course though. Reserve could be slow on the public side.

Heron Lakes (Great Blue) is a pretty good test and a very nice golf course. http://www.heronlakesgolf.com/layout10.asp?id=201&page=5512

I would pass on Stone Creek and/or OGA. Langdon is better than these, but still not as good as Heron/Great Blue, IMO. Langdon does have a great practice facility though. So if that Sunday morning can only be practice, Langdon has a great grass range with quality range balls.

agree about pumpkin-decent course but overpriced...Langdon is a great track for the $....Heron is good, but played there last week and the greens were horrible-which I was surprised to see, as they have been really good for sometime, but looks like there is a weed invasion of some kind.

Thanks for the heads up on the Heron greens. Have not played there since early spring and Heron usually doesn't get good until June or so.

I'm in the Men's club at Heron Lakes and I play the Blue almost weekly. The greens are fine. They look a little beat up b/c 1 or 2 years ago they changed them to bent grass. If you judge a course only on looks I can see how one would say they were "horrible". As far as playable, its very good. The greens are firm and true, the fairways are hard and the ball will run and the blue has the best closing hole in the city hands down.

Of the OGA, Langdon Farm and Chehalm Glenn I much prefer Chehalm Glenn, but you better have at least a 230 yd accurate drive, especially on the back side. IMO, Stone Creek is a really good track, tough back nine and a really fun front nine. If you like old traditional courses Eastmoreland has got much better in the last 2 years, this year in particular, but usually on the weekends it tends to be long rounds.

On you way north there is Tri Mtn. in Ridgefield, not a bad course, not a great course either. If you like to play in the wind a afternoon tee time would work best. Then in Woodland (Wa) there is Lewis River GC. Fun track, pretty and on Golfnow--look at the "hot deals" first.
