September in Oahu

Going to be in Oahu, Sept. 12-20th... any last minute recommendations on where to play without spending a ton of cash, especially given the fact I could potentially play about 6 days? (my wife's going to be working most of the time during the day) I'm thinking I'll probably get one of the HawaiiGolfCards which seem like a good deal given the number of rounds I should get to play... Also, any ideas on places with real nice practice facilities? Even good teaching pro's, club fitters, or golf shops if I wanted to get a lesson or work on a launch monitor? Other ideas on things to do while were there?

I was there last Septemeber- Only played Waialae CC - home of the Sony Open, little pricy, but glad I did it once, Turtle Bay looks absolutely awesome and the only only one I've heard about on Oahu is the one with the highest Slope rating in the US????

My only other advice- Go watch the sunset at North Shore early in your trip!!!! pretty good chance you will want to go another night! It IS all that it's said to be!!!! We even caught a RARE night of surfing at Sunset Beach with 14' waves- it was just jaw-dropping! and one of the nights (actually need to leave about 3-3:30) go up the east side and stop at the "Shrimp Trucks" they go great with 6-pack in a cooler!

Do a quick search for Oahu. There's another thread that was done earlier in the year. I think it's titled 'Hawaii Golf'. There's some good suggestions there. And definitely check out Pitbull808's threads of course photos. They're great and you can get a preview of the courses before you make any decisions. Anyway, here's a quick list of fun courses over here:

Turtle Bay (Links. Choose between the Palmer or Fazio. Seems most people prefer the Palmer)

Luana Hills (Target golf, cut right out of the rain forest. Really cool.)

Koolau (a beast. Also cut out of a rain forest. One of the most challenging courses you'll ever come across.)

Kahuku ($4 for residents, probably like $15 or so for visitors. Right along the ocean.)

Olomana. Fun layout. Michele Wie used to take lessons there.

Great suggestions Tracy. I don't know what Honolulu Golf Card you're talking about though. I know there's a Muni Card that's available but I dont' know why you would want to play the Muni courses here on Oahu.

There's also a Hawaii State ID card you could get. They will issue it to Tourist if you have the correct paperwork. The expiration date will usually be the day you leave the island. I think it cost something like $20 but could easily save you hundreds if you paly a lot of golf during your stay.

^^I second Ko Olina. I had a great round there. Not too challenging, but lots of fun holes, beautifually maintained, and the staff there is as friendly as can be. After my round I commented how impressed I was with the course, and the guy in the pro shop gave me a free logo ball. Can't beat that!

definitely go check out New Ewa Beach and Kapolei! two of the better conditioned courses i have played. although its been awhile for me, im pretty sure they will be great choices. and of course Kapolei has the best golf carts on the island! :cheesy:

pitbull's recommendation of getting a state id may not work (sorry pitbull). here on kauai, the expensive resort courses are getting really strict, requiring a HI state drivers licence, or some other proof of residency.

Sorry to differ here but I was underwhelmed with Ko Olina as I thought it was bland and it is on a very windy portion of Oahu even by Hawaii standards. I played it for free for two days and was glad I didn't spend my own money. Save yourself the drive out there.

If you got any military connections, I would suggest Mamala Bay (Hickam AFB) or Navy-Marine GC. Navy-Marine GC just reopened several weeks ago and the course conditions are really sweet. The only downside is that only the front 9 is open, thus you have to play it twice. They should be opening the back 9 sometime soon.

pm, how can you recommend military courses and not recommend the Klipper :cheesy: ? I tell most people, even if you dont have time to play, just go ask for a cart and drive around the back nine. Those ocean holes are probably the top 5 views I have ever had on a golf course.

I am military and I was very unimpressed with the Klipper. True they have a few pretty holes but the rest of the course is not up to par. I prefered Hickam and I was less than impressed there too...

Ko'olau is nice but a very difficult course. Trick is to play it from the tips to take the doglegs out.

Turtle Bay Palmer is awesome. Played it after after LPGA and Champions Tour had just played there. Got the military rate and the whole day was just awesome. Paid more in souviners than I did in green fee's.

Kanehoe Klipper at Marine Corps Base Hawaii is nice if you can get someone to get you on. Front nine is so-so, but the back nine is spectacular along the water. Gets windy, but it was always to my advantage.

Going there in March 08 and plan on playing Navy-Marine, and Kolina this trip.
