I don't have an official handicap right now, but I play to about a 3, I'd guess. I'd say I'm somewhat freakishly long with my driver, for a guy my size and shape (5'6", 195), but fairly pedestrian with my irons.

Driver- TM SuperDeep TP 8.5-degree, Kai'li 60X- Hell, all over the map, distance-wise. On a flat hole, no wind, I'd say I carry it around 285yds.
3Wood- TM r7 TP 15-degree, Purple Ice 75X- Off the tee, I can carry it like 260-265yds. Off the deck, I carry it around 245 or 250.

4Hybrid- TM Rescue 2009 TP 22-degree, Matrix Ozik Altus X- 205-220yds

I find the distances here to be very realistic. I am usually hitting one club less than most of my regular group. Most hit 8 iron 150.

However, I play with one young guy who hits 8 iron about 180. I don't know how, or why, but he does it. Recently on a 360 down wind par 4, he was about 20 yards short.

Same here. I avg 285-290 off the tee but my 9 iron goes 130. I usually never swing hard with irons exept long irons but even when I do I still can't get them very far.

I generally play weak lofts in my irons (PW 49°-48° degrees...) but dont know the exact specs out of my head.

But what i realize from all the high single digits or even double digits hitting it kinda long - i´d better spent some more time on the putting green cuz length doesnt make you score well.

i play regularly with guys who are 30+ yards past me off the tee, but the distance gap narrows significantly as the clubs go down (i often hit GW/SW/LW slightly farther than they do and am usually only 1 club away on iron shots), which is probably all about ball flight (i'm a low-ball hitter and depend on run out to achieve distance off the tee); from what i've seen playing regular tournament golf, distance has very little to do with actual golfing ability; i've played against guys who can hit it 300+ that rarely find the fairway, can't hit the green with a wedge and can't 2-putt from 20 feet; they also tend to always gauge yardage based on their "best" hits...i.e., it can be raining and cold and they will still insist on hitting 8-iron from 160, then be amazed when they are 20 yards short

I often wonder how many guys would post their numbers if they had a GPS like mine, OnPar Touchscreen, that actually measures the distance for each club and averages it for you? I only question this because I am a self professed short hitter and notice my iron numbers similar to others but the driver? Not even close. Also, proportionately, there are way more people playing to 0 - 3 Hdcp here than I have ever seen on the course or when I was worked in a golf store for 4 years. Just some food for thought.
This site like any other hardcore site for golf, computers, cars, etc. does not attract the run of the mill person as most golfers that you run into on the course have no idea about their equipment or sites like this or don't care enough to look. They just know they are playing the #1 driver and got it for $100 off from the latest sale. I would guess that the majority of users here play more rounds than the average golfer, know infintely more about their equipment and are much more aware of what proper fitting and lessons can do for ones game and how equipment fit for you can help you play better. Most people I run into on the course have no idea what loft, lie, length let alone what the difference is between one shaft or the other has to do with their equipment or how they can optimize their clubs for their swing. Not saying that things don't tend to get inflated here like most other sites, but I would guess that the majority of posters here are in the realm of where they actually would be. Most of us have GPS on our phones, on the cart, range finders, etc. that can be used to verify distances and have been on a Trackman or other device for fitting.

Are you a picker / sweeper? I have friends who hit their drivers the same distance as me but they hit their irons a half to a full club longer. The difference is that they compress the ball more / take more of a divot. I've made some changes to promote more "shaft lean" at impact and I'm hitting the irons a bit further. That's not necessarily the goal, but it is a nice result.
I have read other posters here on golfwrx saying that diggers are inherently longer hitters in irons than sweepers. This makes absolutely no sense. Distance is purely a matter of swing speed, which is generated/optimized through technique and generating lag. It has nothing to do with the size of divot taken, or lack thereof. The divot is taken AFTER the club strikes the ball.

Sweepers and diggers both "compress" the ball. If you don't believe that, then you must also believe that a ball is NOT compressed with a driver. Obviously not true.

Digging does not increase shot distance with your irons. Digging does increase spin by "trapping" the ball, but the increased spin is not helping your distance.

One reason why diggers might hit their irons longer is they are actually de-lofting their irons at impact. Sergio comes to mind. Two guys can have the exact same swing speed with a 7 iron but if one of them de-lofts that 7 iron at impact....he'll hit it a few yards past the other guy.

I'm the same way i can carry the ball probably 250-260 but my 4i=185-190ish 6i=165-170ish 8i=150-160ish? Honestly until i read this thread i never really thought about how far EXACTLY my irons go and just decide what i feel more comfortable with on the course. Also need to work on club selection and just being realistic on how far i can hit a club.

But of course thats when I can improve my ball striking as 5-8 GIRs really shows how good my irons are. Ahhhh good thing they make those things called sand wedges and putters that can still get you pars when you can't hit a fricken 9i onto the green in perfect conditions

To the people who say distance is stupid b/c its all about the accuracy, yes that is true but i would much prefer to have a 7i in from 175 then a 5i. Distance only helps, can't really hurt unless your course management is that bad.

Honestly, one thing i don't understand, it's that i am longer with my driver than a couple of you here (275-285) but i can't match your distance with the short irons ???I can't move my 54* over 100yards, even if i swing it as hard as i can...

+1 You are correct. Just turning a 7 iron into a 6 iron, etc. Plus many factors contribute to higher
spinning shots. Trapping is not one of them. There is no trapping of the ball unless you have
an iron with negative loft.

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
