Where to golf in Charlotte

Need some help !

The last weekend in October I'm flying to Charlotte for work but I'm taking one extra day for hopefully 2 rounds of golf and since i've never been there I was hoping to get some suggestions on where to play. I'll be staying in the Concord area north of Charlotte so i'll be willing to drive up to 30-40 minutes if necassary. I don't mind paying a little more for some "BETTER" courses. Is there anything private worth looking into ?

If you don't mind a little drive - Rock Barn in Hickory, Tot Hill Farm in Asheboro. I've heard great things about Stonebridge in Monroe which is a little closer than the other two. Lots of great private courses in Charlotte and our public courses are good and usually fun, but nothing jaw dropping IMO.

What are typically rated the top 2 or 3 public courses in that area ?

The top courses are all private and I'm not sure how you go about getting on them. The Top 2 public courses in that general area (Concord) are Skybrook and Highland Creek. I haven't been out to Rocky River GC in a few years, but that is top three public track as well.

+1 on Tot Hill Farm. A must if within an hour.

do not go golfing at highland creek. The course conditions are terrible. The 2 best public courses in the charlotte area are Olde Sycamore and Rocky River is an excellent track. It has suffered the last few years with turf conditions but this year is the best i have seen it in a long time.
If you are willing to travel a little bit then also check out Verdict Ridge. It is the best groomed track in the area.

Hi. Just joined and was looking through the forums and came across this about the Rocky River Golf Club in Charlotte. I am going to be at some business meetings at the Embassy Suites next month and then four of us are going to stay for a few days to play golf. We have never travelled with our clubs before and after looking at a map I have a dumb question....the clubhouse is about 4 miles down the road but since we won't have a rental car how do we get the clubs there? Four out of shape old guys are going to have a rough time lugging cart bags down the road LOL! Maybe we simply take a shuttle back and forth? Can we leave them at the front desk and they take them down and store them for us? A first time golf traveler would appreciate any insights, tips or hints to make things easier.

I was not impressed with Rocky River, Go to Skybrook or Verdict Ridge, better tracks in my opinion. If you are pressed for time, you could still roll the dice as RR is not that bad of a course.

And with your clubs?? You can get a taxi and lug them as you would if you don't want to take your clubs golf courses have rental clubs to use. I don't think Embassy suites is going to cater to your clubs, store them in your room?

The Embassy Suites is right next door to the course. I'd check and see if they'd shuttle your clubs over to the course because if I remember correctly, they own or are partial owners of the course now. Be sure to partake in one of my favorite pastimes at Rocky River. Hitting one over the net at the driving range into the ZMax Dragway.

I would surely play Rocky River. The 13th fairway runs right by the Embassy Suites. It is usually in good shape and has some challenging contours on the greens. Skybrook is a good choice also and not very far away. You could probably play RR and Skybrook on the same day. Only about a 15 minute drive. Verdict Ridge and Stonebridge are farther than the 40 minutes you stated. Tot Hill Farm might fit that drive and is worth the trip. It's different, but on a beautiful piece of land. The Tradition is also close and has some of the best conditioned greens around.
