My first putter refinish

So I bought this on the bay for a real good price intending to try and fix it up myself. I've done some paint fill and stamping on my clubs before but nothing like this and with a putter. Not sure i'll leave it like this but its alot better than the rusted version I started with. Id really like to get some kind of coating put on it but not sure yet.

 

I soaked it in CLR and used steel wool to clean it up, put a few coats of gun blue then did the paint fill. Its really shiny cause of the baby oil I put on it, the putter was a little dull after I finished it and I wasnt sure what to use to protect it. Whats a good thing to use on the putter to keep the rust from coming back?

Not really happy with how the back looks so I need to do more work in the cavity if I decide to keep this type of finish on it.

 

 

Weird it almost looks like I got blue paint in the white but its just a reflection.

Yeah actually after looking at the pics I realized it looks alot better than the pics show. I think the shine of the baby oil is making it look kinda bad, so I wiped off the baby oil and took some more pictures of it.

I was gonna say it looked like bubbles in the oil. That said, if the cavity is rusty in the future and gives you an issue, a quick tip is to take a wire bristled brush and (while wearing rubber/nitrile gloves) hold that part of the putter under the level of the CLR and scrub it while it's under there. It'll loosen it up and it'll come right off easily. Then all you've gotta do it prep it and do your bluing/blackening.

You could also try soaking it in coke(i think other sodas will work to), the acid should remove the rust as well. Very nice looking putter in my opinion

i use silicon spray to protect mine and it works great. You can get it at a hardware store or a car parts store. baby oil works fine as well.

Have a couple different head covers ,
alternate them and let them dry out.

Thanks for the info, i'll try the silicone spray. Oh and yeah I actually have two headcovers. Im using one for storing and one for when I play. Thanks.

I use Eezox gun oil. If it's good enough for a $100k gun, it's good enough for my putter.
