Looking for Golf Trip Advice within reasonable drive of Nashville

Recommended Posts

We have a group of 12-16 guys from the Nashville area. We've been taking a trip for several years to Crossville but would like to go somewhere different next year. Here are the requirements:

1. Lodging in some sort of condos/houses/villas. Standard hotel rooms don't work well for us. We like to have more space to socialize, play cards, etc., than a regular size hotel room provides. Lodging doesn't have to be located right beside the golf course, but we don't want to be driving too far after playing 36.

2. Within a +/- 4 hour drive of Nashville.

3. More than one golf course. Don't want to play the same 18 holes 5 times in a row over a 3-4 day weekend trip.

The RTJ sites would be good for the golf and distance requirement, but I can't seem to find any that offer lodging options other than standard hotel rooms. The location at Prattville used to have some villas available nearby, but apparently that isn't the case anymore.

Is there anywhere other than Crossville that fits these 3 criteria? Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

IMO, your best bet is stay in the Murfreesboro area. One of the best courses in Middle TN is Old Fort. You are only about 20-25 minutes outside of downtown Nashville. There are a alot of courses within a 45 minute drive of this area. The Bear Trace, Windtree and Pine Creek are my recommendations. Good luck!

Cobra F6 w/ Whiteboard
XR16 5 wood
TaylorMade Jetspeed 3, 4, 5 hybrid
Steelhead XR 6-PW
Ping Glide 50* and 55*
Mack Daddy3 58*

Check this out. It's literally right outside the entrance to RTJ Oxmoor Valley. 2 18 hole courses and a 18 hole short course. Plus Ross Bridge Resort is 5 minutes up the road. You are also within an hours drive to Farm Links from Birmingham, among some other RTJ trail sites within reasonable drive.

It's a brand new built house, its pretty sick, I always wondered why it wasn't for sale until I came across this.

Oh and if there is a referral reward from the owner, please contact me for details...I could use golf money...Pharmacy School is expensive.

I am from Nashville and we have a group that has gone to Guntersville, Alabama for years. We stay in a house on Lake Guntersville. There are all kind of price points available, depending on how nice you want it and how much you want to spend. The golf is cheap, but enjoyable. Gunters Landing is probably the most classy, but even that is not expensive. Goose Pond Colony, Lake Guntersville State Park, and Chesley Oaks are all fun to play. Just a thought, and not expensive.Just depends on what you like. We used to go to Gulf Shores every year, but it got too expensive for a bunch of hackers like us. Good luck.

I say drive a little farther east. Come to West Knoxville and there are 7 courses within 10-40 minutes as good or better than the Hermitage courses, all priced less than $50. There are some vacation home/condo rentals available in the area, though none associated with any golf course that I know of. Lots of cabins in the Pigeon Forge area, and there are 2 good courses worth playing over there (River Island and Eagles Landing-recently redone), but traffic can be rough.

If you can stand just a little longer than 4 hour drive, I would suggest Callaway Gardens in Georgia. I'm down in Williamson County south of Nashville and we have been to Callaway the past couple of years. Their cabins/cottages are great because you get a large living area and kitchen with them that work well for cards, watching TV, etc. Hampton Cove RTJ is great because of the proximity to Nashville BUT, about the closes option for lodging is a nearby Hampton Inn.

The mention of the Guntersville area is a good one. You can book rooms at the state park's lodge and they are VERY nice for the price. However, the golf course at Lake Guntersville State Park itself is disappointing, IMO.

Goose Pond Colony also has on-site rooms, a lodge and also some "mini-lodges" that are 4 rooms connected. The problem here (and at the state park, as well) is that the rooms fill up with fishermen on a regular basis thanks to fishing tournaments. You can stay at Paint Rock Valley Resort if it's not rented, but that thing is way off in the woods 30 minutes from the nearest major road, and I don't know about their alcohol policy.

I would also Google search the lodging concept in and around the Quad Cities (Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, Sheffield), which gets you close to RTJ The Shoals. Lodging is typically cheap there and people have been coming to the Shoals for years without having golf as part of the trip (the RTJ course is new), so I suspect there is probably something available. There might also be something to be found around the lake at the Double Springs area, which would get you reasonably close to both Huntsville and the Shoals and would also put you very near Deer Run, a nice little public course in Moulton, and also wouldn't be too terribly far from the Birmingham-area courses.

Thanks for all the suggestions. MixedBag, I didn't realize Farmlinks had more than 18 holes.

They don't, only 18 holes. But Clay Shooting and Hunting Grounds. Couple courses within reasonable driving distance, but it's pretty remotely out there. If you are seeking golf primarily, great for a 2-3 day weekend if you don't mind the same course or do other things besides golf.

You could always drive out to Memphis/Tunica area. Plenty of cheap course in Tunica, the Justin Timberlake course is out there in Memphis and Casinos in Tunica.

Oops... sorry, I didn't even notice your #3.......Just stay in Hoover and play Oxmoor Valley, Ross Bridge, Bent Brook, and Ballantrae (little bit of a drive from Hoover, but not bad.... great course)

Here's one more I could think of: StillWaters Resort in Dadeville. It's not that far away from FarmLinks. At one time, you could rent a cabin there but I haven't checked in a long time. It's also possible that Alpine Bay (a RTJ design) in Alpine is still renting timeshares, but again, that's something I haven't checked on in years.

I would either head to Birmingham where there are alot of nice courses within and hour, or the Memphis Tunica area. In Birmingham you have Oxmoor Valley (Ridge, and Valley Course, Ross Bridge, and a short Muni course with awesome views of downtown called Highland Park, just to name a few. Pratville is only 70 or so miles south which is an easy drive and there are 3 great courses there. I have never been to Tunica, however several friends of mine go every year and have a blast. Just google Condo Rentals, and I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for.
