Why do I hook?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure why i hook the ball. Two were normal 15 yard hooks and one was a low snap hook.

look up ball flight laws. this will explain all flights. club path and clubhead angle at impact determines flight.

JDCobra has the idea.....read up on the laws.

The summary is....Club face determines where the ball will start and the path of your swing determines the curvature of the shot.

Basically your path is way too far inside (downswing) to out (meaning the club is working towards first base) and your clubface is closed (see 0:13/0:29 in your video).

Here are my thoughts (I'm not an instructor....but I'm a one handicap and I've played for years):
1. Work on your posture....you stand too tall and don't stick your bum out and back far enough. Your back should be at more of a 45 degree angle and you need to stick your butt out more. Try and copy Luke Donald. What does that matter? Well, it looks like you are "humping the goat" in your downswing....meaning your bum is actually moving towards the ball on the downswing and limiting the space for your arms to move freely down through the ball. This then leads to "getting stuck" and Flipping. The flipping happens with your hands because it is your attempt to save the shot. I work on posture ALLLLLL the time. TRUST ME, this is a big one!!!!

2. Your clubface is closed.....so your grip may be too strong.

3. Your right foot heal comes up on your downswing. If you can keep it planted through impact you'll likely see more consistency and accuracy (ex: watch Steve Stricker through impact).

See your local PGA Pro and get a few lessons.......it will be worth it.

Good Luck!!!!

You hook because you lose your posture ,stall your pivot flip at impact to square up the club.If you did not your inside -out swing path as described by DNICE26 would probably result in big pushes. To eliminate this you must first start with your setup. As DNICE 26 said ,you need to bend to the ball more .you do this by the following:
First without a club .stand up straight.push back on your hip sockets in front of your body.you will feel that your hamstrings stretch and your butt goes up in the air.as you approach grounding the club ,bend your knees. You should feel balanced and your weight is on the.balls of your feet

You actually start the club back with a small disconnect and open the clubface slightly. To correct this disconnect ,put a small nerf ball deep inside your left armpit.Do not drop this nerf ball going back. You need to allow your hips to turn more going back. This will help you to get deeper on your backswing which will make room for your arms on the downswing. and will increase the length of your backswing .On the downswing you have too much lateral motion, which in turn is a major cause of having to swing inside -out.Getting deeper on the backswing will help eliminate this
Try these drills
1 swing with your feet together .If you move to much laterally ,you will fall over.it will also improve your footwork.
2 punisher drill.search for punisher drill on the golfwrx search function.Select" is this an anti flip drill, pictures included".1/2 swings at 1/2 speed.pad the extended rod.start with long chips and progress slowly. You will not flip with this drill
