Arnold Palmer Peerless Pete

Type of wood?
Hey ya'll. Awhile back I picked up a Peerless Pete Driver with a TT EI70 carbon shaft in very nice condition.
My question is, does anyone know what the head is made from. It's very light colored and doesn't have the grain of persimmon. To me it looks like maple?
Here are a couple pics but the quality is poor so I don't think you can distinguish the type of wood from looking. Just thought I'd throw them up

And btw, I just installed a tan Winn tour wrap grip on it that matches the head.
Not only looks tough but it is a rocket.
(not really a classic in vintage terms, i know....)
Thanks! ;-)

According to the Golf Club Identification and Price Guide III, on page 34-5, it reads...

Through bore, Butterfly soleplate Stamps Tip of sole- CONTOUR over WEIGHTED

..looks like we have a winner...

Always wondered if it is still possible to buy a copy of that guide, or whether it is available as a pdf anywhere? Is III the latest version ?

Can anyone shed any light on that ?

Nice driver Kelso. I fancy getting one of those for my friend Pete, who is a hopeless golfer, but very vain - I think the soleplate would appeal to him!

Have you hit it yet ? What's it like ?

The Pete is also hollow in the center much like the Wood Brothers "Corker" although the Peerless has what looks to be a section of metal tubing keeping the wood stable. I have one with the mahagony finish and EI-70 shaft. I would love to get a better shaft installed but it looks like Louisville Golf is one of the last places that does this work.

Kelso:

The Peerless Petes are very definitely persimmon woods. They are probably the last of the major marketed
"game improvement" persimmon woods before/during the onslaught of steel headed drivers. The blondes
have a "golden mist" type finish - but you can usually see the grain of the club a little bit.

I bought my set (Driver, 3 wood & 5 wood) in early February 1993 - blonde the same as yours but with True
Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts (which were hard to find - the graphite shaft was the norm).

My Peerless Pete 5 wood is the best 5 wood I have ever owned/hit. It out performs my Taylor Made R9 5 wood.
Weight was taken out in the bottom of the clubs (not just in the middle) in various spots and the hole(s) were
normally corked. The hole usually has a plastic liner with the cork in it. Some may not have the cork depending on
there weight. PowerBilt used to use the plastic liner as well.

The clubs are oversized - I think the driver is in the 230 range. I played my Peerless Petes for years - and still do
sometimes. I bought my set after I saw Arnold Palmer hitting his Peerless Pete Driver 300 plus in a skins game in
Hawaii.

Here are several pics of the 5 wood:

Thank you for the replies!
rex235, I appreciate the information/history straight from the book. I looked into buying one and seeing different editions I decided to wait & figure out which one I wanted. ( the latest one available I assume, lol)

Bladed Junkie, Being oversized, it's lighter than it looks. Well balanced and very comfortable. Very easy to hit. I haven't had it on the range or in play yet but hit 1/2 doz. behind my house into the woods. First thing that impressed me was how fast the ball came off the face for a wood. (or at least it seemed to) That's why I called it a rocket!

Hi Bella, thanks for the pic of your 5wood. I like the Arnold Palmer script on top.
Your right about the grain of the persimmon. I took it for granted that it might be maple because of the color, but if you look close at the top you can see the u grain at the toe. Also you can see the speckles of the persimmon grain on the face. So cool....
I had heard they were 'hollow' but that can mean different things and I appreciate the description. (now I won't cut it open to see how it works, lol.....I have that tendency btw)
Any idea of the loft?
It's cool that you kept them. I wish I would have kept more but I used to buy, sell, trade what ever for whatever. I have held on to a few clubs but not as many as I would have liked looking back.
I also picked up a beautiful T 945 Eye-O-Matic recently. ( I know it's fairly common, but not to me!) I'll post a couple decent pics this weekend.
I'm about ready to put this club ho-ing thing to rest for the time and concentrate on more practice and time playing.

I remember that Powerbilt model as well. Dynacraft used to sell the head by itself for clubmakers. I'm almost positive that Louisville Golf made most if not all these heads and they will almost always email you back if you ask them about clubs like this.

Thanks, I might send them a message. Louisville covered quite a few companies back then.
I'm familiar with them as I carry their 3wood niblick in my winter bag. It took the place of both a 4 wood and a hybrid. Lightened the load! It's funny how you can take a little off a persimmon and still get the yardage you're after, but if I take a little off a metal wood it just dies. Might be me........
