Mac SS2 Tourney Custom v SS2 Tommy Armour irons

I have just noticed a collectors set of Macgregor Jack Nicklaus stamped Tourney Custom SS2 irons on Classifieds.

 

This interested me as I have just listed my set of c 1957 SS2 Tommy Armour CF 4000 irons on Classifieds at the same time, and they must be made from the same design, virtually identical.

 

I am wondering if my price is about right? Probably breaching rules or on wrong forum, but I figure there are some experts here that may be able to advise me. It would be good for them to go to a collector or enthusiast who would appreciate owning them, I am not looking to make a killing.

Don't know what you are asking, but I recently picked-up a set of TA CF 4000, 2-9, SS2 irons and 1,2,4, SS2W woods off of ebay. It may be an apples-n-oranges comparison, since the irons show more 'chatter' than yours, and the woods are in really rough shape--but no cracks, 'good bones' as the HGTV crowd used to say about some of their thrift store furniture restorations. Bought them mainly for the woods (always 'Jones'n' for Mac woods and Hogan irons) and the price. Theses irons have the original Pro-Pel #3 shafts (weak), but newer, Chamois replacement grips (can't stand'em, call 'sham-wows').

I paid $29 for the clubs + $25 shipping. I seem to recall that the seller really wanted to sell quickly (might have even been a non-golfer), so based on that, and the condition of the woods, probably priced them low. As to your clubs: without seeing more of them, I would hesitate to try to put a price on them. However, based upon their good condition, Tour wrap grips in good condition, and newer DG shafts (those should be included in your selling points, along with shaft flex: S300, R300, etc. ), and a little patience, I know you can get more than the above for them.

The absence of the orginal shafts and grips will not appeal to the purists (rabid) among Mac collectors. However, for a part-time collector, who might be wanting a piece of history that is playable, and not just for display, your clubs will be very appealing.

My 'best' advice is to go to ebay.com, do a little research and price/quality comparisons. Even if you don't sell there, with thousands listings for MacGregor clubs, you are likely to find some good comparables. If you are not familiar with it, start searching with MacGregor golf club, then once that comes up you can narrow down Tommy armour or CF 4000.

The Nicklaus ones are SS1 irons and are a "collector's item." They're built (more or less) to Jack's specs. They do however have a smashing set of leather grips. The head design should be very similar between the two. The Nicklaus ones are often listed for quite a lot, but they're more of a wall hanger type of thing. I think it will be quite difficult for someone to get top dollar for a set though. Yours are the originals, but they're not really collectible because SS1s are more sought after than SS2s and yours have been reshafted costing the grips and ferrules as well. So, maybe they'd be better for someone who wanted to play them? Anyway, I don't know the prices on either, but I thought I'd throw that info out there.
