Hogan Wedge Question

Recommended Posts

I have a set of 3-E Hogan Apex 2003 which I would like to source some "matching" wedges for.

The E loft is 46 degrees, so what I am after is a gap wedge either 50 or 51 degrees and a (56) sand wedge.

I was wondering if anyone has the Hogan catalogue from 2003 and could advise what wedges were available in the Hogan range at that time. I've seen various different types on eBay but was interested in which ones were actually brought out to complement that Apex set.

As a slight aside, the Hogan forged iron chart that is freely available and covers 1953-1999 is an excellent reference. I was wondering if anyone has ever seen anything similar for wedges, from when Hogan started making wedges as a separate entity outside of a matched set ?

Many Thanks

Blade

In 2003, the Apex Equalizer was 48* and the Apex Edge Pro Equalizer was 46*. That same year Hogan sold the Riviera and Carnoustie series of wedges in 50*, 52*, 54*, 56*, and 58*

Hollabachgt - thanks very much for that - never seen that website "wind back" site before .. pretty cool!

I screwed up in any case as my Apex's are 2006 not 2003 ... but a simple year change in the URL in that link you provided gives me the 2006 site as well, and the wedges listed are Apex, Colonial, Carnoustie and Sure Out.

So now I am after the Hogan Apex wedges in 52 and 56 degree lofts.

Top bombing sir!

Just a word of warning. There are 2 versions of the Colonial, one forged and one cast. The forged is super, the cast is crap.

Attached is Hogan brochure with info on wedges. The Colonial sounds like a wedge for the average player needing more offset. The Apex wedges had minimal constant offset.

I also have a warning of sorts - I played colonial wedges for about 2 years and they performed fine, but if you don't like offset you might be put off by them. I haven't seen wedges as much offset as those had. Riviera gap wedge a friend plays has virtually none though.

There is no wedge catalog covering all the years except for the Golfworks Maltby iron manufacturer book that lists most of the wedges through the 90's. I have all the brochure catalogs from 1958-2007 and have hoped to some day put together a website with all the clubs from his catalogs, I have not enough time yet!!

Thanks very much for all the info everybody. Exactly what I was after.

Points noted on the Colonials ... I will be trying to source the Apex wedges.

@Teevons those catalogue pages are fantastic info - thankyou! I do hope you find time to do that website; what an awesome reference source that would be !

I must get that book ... Golfworks quoted me $30.44 for UK delivery (in 2-3 weeks) for a $14.99 book though, so I will wait until next time I am in the USA.

I found the same problem, cancelled the order and went to Amazon. Got a good 3rd edition for £15 including shipping. Plenty more where that came from.

$30 for standard shipping is gross overcharging, I think they wanted $50 for expedited service...ripoff or what!

While we're on the subject teevons, I have a 52/08 hogan wedge that has no stamping on sole and no other markings than the hogan signature and loft/bounce on the back. Exactly like this one hogan wedge. Can you age that by your brochures when you have the time?

Does anyone know when the BECU wedges were produced? I have a full set of these with hardly any use. Not sure whether to take them out or not!
Are they any softer than the standrad wedge?

2003, sole was blank except for degree, the degree might have worn off from use, although the 96 wedge had no number on sole??

i also have a hogan wedge i cant identify. its very sim to the special sand wedge but has less bounce . its not the 47 wedge . it has no marking other than the ben hogan sig and the medallion emblem. its got about 55-56 deg of loft. its the best wedge i have ever hit . i date its age as from the 70,s or 80,s.

73 hogan apex
